Don't worry it will be late this year/early next year before I get a new car.
That way I'l have some christmas money, birthday money and a little time to save up.
If i get £1000 together, plus my Focus is worth £1000 part ex then I can get a very nice 406 with change left over :)

I reckon with the age of these cars, overall condition is more important. What if you were given the choice between a well maintained 1998 2.1td D8 or an abused 1999 HDi D9?

If you find a decent D8 and you have the time & cash to spare, then go for it

In my opinion Bailes, you have made the right choice by you 8)

And this is coming from someone who works in IT, has a CCNA and the Computer Science degree
However, there is no point doing it if you don't feel that it will motivate you, as it would end up as what you do for the rest of your life until retirement. Sitting at a desk in front of a computer all day is not for everybody.

I know people who work in IT who are demotivated, and they have said that they would rather have done a trade job. However, what lured them in was the careers adviser promise of cash (it isn't great tbh compared to trades and banking) and a professional job (most IT jobs you wear normal clothes, and if you are demotivated you wont want to sit and do it anyway).

Always follow your dream, what *you* want to do, not what careers advisers / friends / parents tell you you should do.

So good on you Bailes, good luck! :)

What's the power of a car got to do with the braking requirement?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Oooh, I have an opinion about this. It seems to me that in these days of ABS, brakes fitted to the cars are far more powerful than they really need to be - it gets those important stopping distances down and hey, they'll never lock up with ABS so why worry? The result is lots of underused disks going rusty. The ones on the back of the 406 seem to be quite good at it, plus my brother just had to replace the fronts on his Boring 'cos the insides of them were a mass of rust.

ive a set of normal brakes i think mintex or apex. They do the job, the car stops quickly. what more do you need.

The brakes will be completley OEM in terms of size etc.
Just a good quality disc and pad setup and I love the feel of braided hoses and it looks nicer too

but really , why ? if its a well maintained D8 then keep it original , there is no big difference (my opinion) between the D8 and D9 apart from a posh front grill and some tarted up headlights.

i would rather spend the cash and time keeping the well maintained D8 maintained even better.

my point is . changing the front end and back end of a D8 into a D9 would probably cost more to do than the actuall D8 is worth ?

why ?

each to their own i supose .

Only for track use. A 110HP car and a 500HP car, weighing the same, could use precisely the same braking system (cylinders, pads, brakes, servos, calipers, etc) as each other, providing they're braking from 70 MPH down to a dead stop.

In a track day car, then you're quite right - you'd want really great brakes on that 110HP car to guarantee you can brake at a shorter distance from the corners, allowing you to remain faster for longer, thus reducing your lap times.
