yes hunting is when its revs up and drops around whatever revs it should be at, but cant sit constantly at the correct revs. mines only does it when the car is idling. That suggests that one of the sensors is dodgy.... or.... theres is air leaking into the system between the throttle body and engine head, a sensor is picking up on this and trying to supply fuel to compensate for the extra air, but just cant get it right.

I'm still a bit wary(sp) of whether an injector could be making this ticking noise. It sounds more like a valve/lifter clicking against its seat. Do these cars have hydraulic lifters does anyone know?

Hence why I suggested touching them to feel if it is or not.

mines a 2.0 ltr 1998 and has had a tick for ages, it`s more annoying than anything. I also had the revs "hunting" some time ago, that was the stepper motor.
Am I the only clown here?

Have just looked today and mine seems to do the same thing!!

I knew I had a faint tapping, but after reading this I thought I'd look at my rev counter and it seems to fluctuate just above and below 1000rpm. This was not long after start up though and I forgot to look again at the end of my journey, so it may have just been a start up thing.

philg, you say yours does it. How much does it fluctuate by?

Have just gone out and had another look and it's not as bad as I thought it was. It's probably always done it and they may all do it.

However, on close inspection I have noticed a hole in my rear box  so could this be anything to do with it? Don't really know a lot about pressures.

Have done 3 journeys today and it hasn't done it so it probably was just where I had started it.

This is obviously a common thing and I would also be interested in the cost of the stepper motor if anyone knows?

If you lot had the mighty diesels, you'd have none of the hunting. It would sit rock solid on 850rpm :D

I don't know anything about petrols, but I know my housemate's Rover :!: does it and my ex-boss's Skyline... all "hunt" around, especially when cold.

Dont think it matters at all. As long as it doesn't fluctuate too much and cause the revs to drop so low that it stalls.

Yes have had a read and it is suggested to clean the stepper.

sometimes the revs " hunt " up and down if you have got an air leak , like a blowing manifold gasket or something round there , and as for the ticking that should be just the injectors opening and closing , try some fuel cleaner in your tank to see if that quietens them down

check the sensors in the engine
coolant and rpm sensor either
one can cause problems 1 of
them could have an intermittent
fault
