just aquired a 407 hdi with a blown engine, now i have a 52 plate 2.0 110 hdi with smashed rear end would the engine transplantfrom the 406 int othe 407 to make one good car i think the only stumbling block would be the 407s 6 speed box

I would think that if the engine in the 406 and the engine in the 407 are the same, you would be able to use the 407's 6-speed box. If not, then you could always take the 5-speed box out of the 406 as well as the engine?

I don't think there were engine variants common to both 406 & 407, (but I could be wrong).

I don't think there's any issue mating a DW10 to an ML6 gearbox, but we don't know waht the original engine was - could be a 1.6 HDi, in which case there may be problems.

The greater concern is probably getting the electronics to work - can't see a 406 engine ecu working in a 407, or an older engine working off a newer ecu. :?

I thought the 2.2 HDi was present in both cars (or was that the 406 and the 607 only?) and so I figured that the 110 HDi might have appeared in both as well.

Oh well. I'll butt out as I really don't know enough to be advising on this sort of thing - I completely forgot about the ECU

Hope this works out for you!

Just what is the difference between a 2.0 110 and a 2.0 136?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

The main difference is that the 110 is 8 valve and the 136 is 16 valve.

The 2.0 HDi 407 is 136 16 valve, up to 2007, later ones are 140.

2.0 HDi 136 is a Ford lump
The 2.0 HDi from the 406 won't fit.

The 1.6 is a no no.

Although I think the 2.2 might be a go but you'd have to swap most the ancilaries, injectors etc etc

The 2.0 136 is fitted to Ford mondeo, widely renowned as a huge improvement over Ford engines, it is also fitted to many of the Volvos amongst several others.

The layout under the bonnet along with the different subframe is completely different on the 407 to the 406.

Dogslife is probably correct about the electronics compatibility.

Just a wild suggestion, but if the original engine's got a bottom end problem, might it be possible to graft the 136 head onto the 110 block?

I thought it was just the 110 with a 16 valve head and a few minor tweaks?
What do Ford call it? TDCI?

That would be cool :D
But I would imagine that 1.6 110, 2.0 136, Mondeo and 407 have mutually compatible engine mounting points, but that 2.0 110, 406 is different to this.
