It seems that in my attempts to diagnose and fix my supposed MAF sensor faults viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20132 by cleaning all of the earth points (the one by the drivers-side engine mount, the one by the clutch slave cylinder and yes - the one by the battery box) I suddenly realised what I'd done - I had stupidly disconnected the battery but from the chassis end of the negative cable - without the 3 minute rule.
I only realised what I'd done as I was rebolting the cable to the chassis. All of these years I've worked on the car and managed never to disconnect it.
- I tried to start the car but get "Engine immobiliser fault" on the MFD.
- I have the key symbol on the dash board.
- I can't clear fault codes with PP2000.
- The "plip" built into the key doesn't work now - I guess it's out of sync?
- The engine turns over - but naturally it wont start.
- I carefully went through the BSI Soft reboot process three times - but I don't get a "bong" from the COM2000 when I turn on the head lights. The lights do come on.
- Searching through PP2000 I see a fault about no transponder signal - I forget the exact words.
- I've tested the COM2000 by holding the "Automatic lighting" button on the stalk - this elicits a "bong" when switching between automatic and non-automatic lighting modes in tandem with the relevant display on the MFD.
So, what next?
My immediate plan is that I'm going to following the three minute rule, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and then attempt to go through each and every fuse.
The worst part is that I can't even test whether cleaning all of the contacts has made difference to the original problem - that of the engine reporting MAF/Antipollution faults.
The earth points were pretty manky, not surprising for a 12 year old, 51 plate, HDI 90.
It's an RHY Bosch ECU.
