Not a few mm; typically a truck's length behind, which is 18m. At 55mph, (24m/sec) that's the best part of a second's reaction time, which can then have another half second added on due to air brake lag. That is, assuming I'm not paying attention to the road ahead, which I do...
And the fuel consumption improvement is quite substantial - something like 20%, along with noticeably less wind noise (handy in the missus' car, which has roof rail bars on which are seized and can only be removed with an angle grinder...)

God no! Although when I've finished my car computer replacement project, it'd be handy if I could use open wifi points to open up the spotify playlists I haven't marked as offline!
