MOT failed need part advice
Hi, just took a 406 hdi for mot and it failed on a rear suspension upper ball joint. Searching for the part to replace is proving difficult!
I can find many front lower ball joints but nothing for rear upper.
Can anyone advise what this part might be? I've been asked to obtain the part so a local garage can fit it for me but I've no idea what I'm looking for.
Cheers guys.

Upper ball joint? There are bushes but no ball joints, unless it's the anti roll bar link, or there's one in the end of the track arm

Re: MOT failed need part advice
Strange, it actually states on the mot refusal,
"suspension arm ball joint excessively worn offside rear upper"
Any ideas or should I contact the mot station to clarify?

Re: MOT failed need part advice
It'll be the one for adjusting the rear tow,
I got mine from Eurocarparts, but carparts4less are there sister company & cheeper
The part is know as suspension arm rear, it has a ball joint one end & a bolted joint the other
where the offset bolt goes.
It's advisable to source new adjustment bolts, offset washers & nuts before doing the job
& you'll definitely need a rear suspension alignment after (mine was dangerous)
& yes I'd marked it up.
If you have a look through my post's, I'd put picture's up.
Sorry just looked & pic's have vanished.

Toe arm, track arm, link arm, I dunno what it's called but I wouldn't have said upper ball joint
Wasn't there some issue with obtaining the adjustment gubbins?

Re: MOT failed need part advice
Well that makes it a bit clearer than what the mot station have put on the refusal. Still not 100% sure which part is actually needed because searching for suspension arm rear still gives a few different items.dirtydirtydiesel wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 8:53 pm It'll be the one for adjusting the rear tow,

Think I'll have to contact them for clarification, you would think the "professionals" would put correct details on the notes. Literally nobody online, either ebay or other online stores even mentions ball joints for that area!
Thanks for the help.

Is this the part you are referring to?

Never mind, been back to the garage and confirmed, this is the part. Why they have put it down as a ball joint is beyond me!! Every place online calls it a suspension link bar or anti roll bar link. I would have had a clue if they put that on the mot!
Decision time though, do I pay my local garage to fit or roll my sleeves up and get dirty this weekend
This bar and front discs and pads to do!

Re: MOT failed need part advice
The antirollbar link is plastc (I think) and has a balljoint each end, we can't look up the parts diagrams any more so I can't tell you the proper name for the other link but it controls track (& trace?) and camber. A quick search later... yeah, there are loads of sites listing it as the antirollbar link. Horizontal link rod? That sounds better.
There is a ball joint one end of it but calling it "upper" rather implies there's a lower, and there aint.
And the lesson is: Always get the tester to show you the part 'cos a lot of the time he might be calling it the wrong name.

Don't forget what I said about the elliptical washers & bolts, you will need them (trust me)sturose wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 1:48 pm Is this the part you are referring to?

Yeah, it's straight forward enough, but you will need to get proper rear wheel alignment done after.

That sounds like a great idea, unless it's a part you can only see with the car up on a lift...dirtydirtydiesel wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 6:43 pm Steve, my tester mark's the failed part's with a yellow paint pen.
