ABS

Post by hammerman »

Right then,here we go.
After doing much searching on here & other places,it would seem i have a common problem. My abs light came on a while ago,& with the mot soon & a few near misses,i thought i`d get it checked.Main dealer was cheapest for diognostic,£40.Code was front n/side d/shaft,£255 all in for replacement.I had a look yesterday,& found loose & split toothed ring, with a tooth broken. After searching around,i`ve found i can change just the c.v joint for around £35 + 2 ltrs of g/box oil.
Also had a internal grinding noise from o/side rear wheel & poor handbrake.Having re-newed disks, pads & shoes last year,i knew they were fine.I removed the disk & found the hand brake shoe retaining pin & spring had come off,& had stripped 2 teeth off the abs as well :frown: So now looks like a new hub,at a not too bad £50.
Having changed/removed drive shafts/gaiters before on other cars,so is there any things to get caught out on?Or is it as straight foward as the Haynes manual states?
Same for the year hub.Never changed a hub before, but looks straight foward enough in the Haynes.Neighbour has lent me a puller/hub extractor.
I`ve also heard that once repairs are made, all being well drive off & the abs should re set its self & the light will go off.Is this correct???
I`m very mechanicly minded, but never tackled abs or hubs before.
Have some nice 3/4" sockets & bars for hub nuts(have nice big tools for my 35t digger :D )
Any help or comments would be welcomed. Thanks :)

Hi hammerman, I have just this week changed the ABS ring onthe front drivers side of my 406, I bought my rings ( I bought two as the other will fail sooner or later)from Nigel Thompsons Transmissions in Leeds Tel 0113 289 0819. They cost £20 pounds each + vat and £10 courier.
there are two different sizes for my 2001 HDi model there are 48 teeth on my model and the internal diameter of the ring is 90mm but there are 86mm as well, so be sure if you order.
Now I stripped the dics and the disc carrier and followed haynes and advise from posts on this site till i had the cv joint ready to pull out.
At this point I decided to wait till I had the ring si I cleaned the joint where the ring will fit with a dremmel to get all the rust which was standing proud and then a light rub with sone wet and dry made a smooth surface.
When the rings arrived I offered the ring to the joint and with a very gentle pesuasion the ring tapped into place beautifully, and that was job done.
Now in my opinion I find the man at Nigel Thompsons very approachable and I reckon he makes the internal diameter dead on 90mm so it is a dead fit for the joint. I have heard of rings from other suppliers having to be heat shrunk on and that means CV joint out and a load of main with blowlamps.
This ring does nothing but turn with wheel, there is no load on it at all so I reckon the tap on fit is perfectly good enough.
Hope this helps

Hello,
ABS fault will clear automatically. Once the problem is fixed and you drive off it will clear when you get upto speed.
Sounds like you have all the right tools for the job.

Regarding the rear hub....take note of how many teeth there are on the abs ring before you buy the new hub....there are two sizes.

Removing the hub should be simple, on my brother's car the hub just pulled straight off without using a puller, but a slide hammer is the best tool for pulling hubs off.

As for the CV joint, it's a conventional type with a spring clip holding the joint on, you just have to knock the joint off.

The hub nut and driveshaft nut are both 35mm socket size.

Right, done front cv joint.Fairly easy, just had trouble re-filling the gearbox, but found solution on here :) .Gear change feels a bit smoother now.But the abs light is still on.So i`ve just taken the rear hub off,& found something in the brake dust. After looking on ECP`s site,it is the tip off the rear abs sensor :frown:  .So the handbrake retaining bolt stripped 2 teeth off the abs ring,& the sensor tip.Hopefully ECP will have a sensor in stock in the morning.£57 all in,so more money.Hopefully this will finish it,otherwise i`ll be VERY angry

Nicely done. Don't you hate it when you fix one problem only to find it's masking another? That's my car, that is

Keep an eye where you've been parking. I found after changing my gearbox oil the first time I was leaving oil stains everywhere. Thankfully a few weeks later I had to empty the 'box again but I won't make the mistake of not using a new seal again

No leaks so far,but looks like some gearbox/diff seals need doing.Just weeping really, nothing major.I`ll leave the under tray off for a few days just to make sure theres no drips.
So far with cv joint, hub, oil, rocker cover gasket &ALL service items i`m up tp £150.Abs sensor is £57,& i need front tyres.I was hoping to get Goodyears back on the front as i was happy with those(£63 each,205/55/16`s)but with the abs sensor going to have to go with cheapys :( .I have some cheapys on the front at the mo,but they have 2mm of tread left, but they are not very good in the wet & the front end feels light. But the`ve lastsed 23k miles so far.
Still, without the tyres, its still all cheaper than the main dealer,& that was just the driveshaft.By the looks of it they would have rung me saying another £250 for the rear!

Heh. I bought mine thinking I just had a binding handbrake or knackered wheel bearing to replace. Simple right?
Turns out to be:

Rusted back brake backplates (mitigated, not fixed yet) rubbing on knackered discs (replaced all rear brake components) along with knackered brake fluid (which caused me to need a new clutch slave cylinder)

That alerted me to the need for severe camber alignment and new rear tyres

The rubbing brakes were hiding the need for new gearbox oil. Discovered the air intake was mangled while I was down there.

That revealed the poor engine performance was coming from elsewhere, so I tarted changing the spark plugs

That revealed the spark plug wells were literally full of oil

Cleaning that revealed the coil pack was cracked

Once I got all 6 cylinders firing again, I realised the clutch was slipping!!!!

While doing that I discover MOT failures in the form of low front brake pads (£87!!!) and a split CV boot (sigh). Also one of the anti-roll bar link rods was seized and needed cutting off and replacing :(

Loads of other problems with the car, but the point is all this came from one seemingly simple symptom
