Re: HID Lights
The legality of retro-fittring them to 'reflector' style headlamps does the rounds regularly on car forums and although the manufacturers will tell you the lamps have 'shields' or whatever to make them suitable for reflectors they still are not the approved and testest light source which gained the certification of the headlamp design in the first place.
Primarily the reflector needs to be a 'projector' lens like a 406 coupe's and then it should have self-levelling adjustment and headlamp washers.
Many people have retro fitted these kits to reflector lenses and have sailed through MOT's and whatnot but the big sticking point is the insurance. If there was a bad accident (god forbid) they would look for anything for which they can apportion blaim and a 'converted' or unapproved headlamp will not look good.
I think the 406's headlamps are very good (much better than my Volvo) and if you fit Phillips Extreme Power H7's the light colour and distribution is fantastic.

Re: HID Lights
I did the conversion on my Nissan 200sx and the difference was phenominal. When I bought the pug I decided that I wanted a set for the pug but the prices have gone up since so not got round to it yet

Re: HID Lights
as i dont have much experience in 406's i have to ask.. are coupe headlights the same as non coupe lights?

Re: HID Lights
Woah, the coupe headlights are a totally different beast. They have a projector lens which most new saloons and exec cars with xenons have. The coupe is the perfect car to retrofit xenons to. (Except they don't have auto levelling).
The D9 saloons and estates have reflector lenses where the light is bounced off the chrome inside the headlamp and designed to point in a certain direction.
However, all 607s came with reflector headlamps and the later ones had xenons. So it is still not unusual for manufacturers to equip xenons to reflectors.

Re: HID Lights
Is there any retrofit projector lens lights for the saloon with a projector lens, but would HID lights slot into the fog lights because then they wouldn't have to be on all the time, only when they were really needed.
Re: HID Lights
as i am new to 406's, can you couple light units be made to fit the non coupe models?eoin27 wrote:Woah, the coupe headlights are a totally different beast. Re: HID Lights
You really wouldn't want them that low - they'd be completely useless down there406executiveHDI wrote:Is there any retrofit projector lens lights for the saloon with a projector lens, but would HID lights slot into the fog lights because then they wouldn't have to be on all the time, only when they were really needed.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: HID Lights
That's down to the K rating. There are charts on the net showing the K rating and the colour of the light. From memory 4300k is white406executiveHDI wrote:are all hid lights blue or is that just the ones that have been put on wrong
Re: HID Lights
Differences reflector and projector based xenon conversion.

Projector headlight in coupe has a sharp cut-off. But it designed for halogen bulb optics. For real hid performance, D2S xenon projector must be use.eoin27 wrote:Woah, the coupe headlights are a totally different beast.
