An Eventful Couple Of Days

Post by gumby6371 »

Just an update in the life of a 406 owner, took delivery of 2 nice new lower ball joints to replace the rattly knackered ones on my D8, spoke to my friendly mechanic who has all the tools to do the job quickly and easily, £30 to fit so I promptly booked it in, sourced a replacement injector to replace leaky one and all is good. The day before the work is due to be done I left work in rush hour traffic, accelerating hard to join the dual carriage way and 'THUD' pedal hits the floor as the throttle cable lets go. Spend a scary 15 minutes nervously stood next to road as people narrowly miss my stricken car until brother in law turns up with a big zip tie to jam the throttle open so I can get it home.
All fixed now and feels like a new car with a fresh set of ball joints, the steering is much tighter and hopefully the mpg should improve with a replacement injector. (Planning to send the old one away for a refurb if anyone knows a good, cheap place in the west midlands?)
Before anyone comments, yes, I could do all those jobs myself but as I paid £60 labour (mates rates) to fit cable, injector and 2 ball joints I'm quite happy, especially as I don't have a decent jack, axle stands etc....
On the down side he did forget to reconnect the turbo pipe, which I took the P out of him for but overall life is good again :cheesy:

Today I am £200 down. I planned to reseal my pump, do my timing belt and cambelt.
So I lock up the engine, remove the cabelt covers and go to remove the lower crank pully. So put the socket on it, got a nice long bar and slowly put some pressure on it.... CRACKK!
Bloody bolt sheard
So I had to get my Dad to tow me to my local garage and wait there till they sorted it. :supafrisk:

Then people wonder why I don't do my own mechanical work? Because everything goes wrong

Drilled and tapped it for me, they let me do my cambelt and timing belt there and then with a watchfull eye over me and charged me a few quid for use of the ramp for a day. Charged me £70 in the end and the timing belt kit, aux belt, new tensioners and waterpump cost me £130. I decided I aint going to do my fuel pump. I'l just f*ck it up

It needs the pump resealing, 4 new shocks, new O/S driveshaft, new gearbox and I think the stop solidoid has started sticking and sometimes I have to turn the key a few times before I hear it click and the car will fire up :( Plus it needs the sunroof looking at as it's leaking and I can't work out where from.
Although I really want to sort it!
Paint it white, colour code everything and tint the back windows. Get 206 GTi Wheels in Anthracite with some nice rubber, get a twin exhaust like on the 6cyl beemers, drop it 30-40mm. Get the governor taken off the fuel pump, get the turbo turned up, fuel up, bigger FMIC and meths injection. If I can get 130bhp and have it revving to 6k I'd love it! Even knew what to call it...
Image
I'l be gutted when it's gone. It's a really nice car to drive... but I hate it! As stupid as that sounds :(
Unfortunatly I really can't be spending much on my car any more and I'm already at my limit. Plus I think a petrol suits me far better as I like revvy engines. So Focus it is :)

Sorry for taking over your thread Gumby :supafrisk: Hope you don;t mind too much :P

Brilliant result there :D Could have been a nightmare getting the snapped thread out. Good result doing the timing belt and stuff too :D
Maybe you could get help with the fuel pump as well?

Nobody bar diesel specialists will touch it! They all want £150 - £200 to sort it :(

lol stop your moaning... I decide that the Peugeot isn't worth keeping any more and buy a Mondeo.

After hearing you all laugh and joke about how sh*te they are, I ignored your warnings and bought one.

Three weeks later. I'm back to driving the good old fathful Peugeot. Just to get her running again, I had to get 4 injectors and two crankshaft oil seals. £900... I went to Ford first... http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/7921/reportw.gif

Don't laugh.
