Broke this one too now.

Post by DiscoPol »

Its looking like i might have killed the disco's rear hub bearings. oops and they say landys are supposed to be tough!

who would have thought leaving it submerged in muddy water for 3 hours and hammering it off road every day on my way to work could do so much damage

well its going into the dry garage at the mother in-laws tomorrow and i will stick it up in the air and see what really is F.U.B.A.R'd
its not stopped raining here for the last 4 days and the 8km off road i do to get to work everyday will be a killer if i have to wait for more bloody parts from the uk, looks like a bucket full of grease and some crossed fingers for a week or so might be the only option :(

it sounds like its tearing itself apart at the back end when i drive it, maybe i shouldn't have stuck 400km on it this week eh

oh it almost makes me miss the 406 again

Perhaps a Toyota landcruiser is what you need.
i recall a saying
If you want to go into the outback use a Land Rover.
If you want to go into the outback and come back use a Toyota.

The Japanese 4WD's have a larger following here as opposed to the Land/Range Rovers.

Massive aftermarket scene for Hilux/Landcruiser/Patrol/Pajero - The Hilux is one of Australia's top selling cars!

I can see why, after looking for ages at pickups and really the japanese make them all my uncle decided to get the hilux it seemed the best one of them all, on the other hand we seen a tata pickup which was one of the worst, it was brand new but had unpainted areas, rust, and craked seals.

Ouch! Hope you can get it sorted easily, Disco.

(You know it's just the beginning of destiny leading you to your next 406 - may as well give in & start looking). :cheesy:

Having said that landies have plenty of character, i still like them so good luck to you in the fixing process, but there plenty of off road parts sellers. You might get the new hub but accidentally get carried away, and raise the whole thing by 5 inches, put articulated axles on it, 30 inch tyres. Its what typically happens when you go to the shop for the paper, lucozade appears to be 2 for £1 and you end up with it and more stuff you never planned to buy.

Already looking Doggy

as a second car for the wife though, have seen a nice saloon 110 HDi Polski plated LHD for silly money, dont know the year yet but i am very tempted,

at the moment I cant claim my fuel as a work expense as the landy is uk plated so if i buy the 406 for the wife and register it to my company i wont have to convert and re-plate and register the landy here, which has its advantages  (think of anything that might take a picture of your number plate for example and the cops that have an aversion to pulling over uk plated cars as they dont speak english) that way i can keep my landy as god intended and the wife gets a car and i get to claim my fuel pre-tax thus lowering my tax payments each month, win win win win situation.

as for the hub bearings, well stripped down the rears this morning and cleaned and repacked the bearings, the old grease was all but gone and all that remained was a gritty brown nastiness, the back sounds much quieter now :)
we have to go to the Kindergarten with our lil fella in about 10 mins as he starts there in a week and its a get to know you play session for the kids today so had to come home and get cleaned up :(
then this afternoon im gonna strip the front hubs and do the same with them hopefully this will help the thing survive for another week or two till i can get some new bearings, gaskets, hub spanner, etc etc delivered from the uk.
It certainly wont make things worse, and i have to say im quite enjoying working on a big daft car with big bolts and stuff :)
fingers crossed guys please.

good luck to you, the joys of working on high 4x4s is that you can get under them as opposed to jacking them up.

It's good that you can get to the bearings and grease them up.

Everyone else gets the response..."sorry mate, sealed unit, you'll need a new one"

it was a doddle really Welly, only problem was that I couldn't get the brake calliper off on one side so had to just pack extra grease through the outer bearing in the hope it got to the inner one eventually, but what ever I did seems to have worked (fingers crossed  ) its all quiet now and the feeling of roughness through the wheel and pedals has all but gone.
Image

now to get some replacements ordered up from the UK and buy some sort of "rounded off head" bolt remover for my handy work knacking the calliper bolt up and do it all again when they arrive in a weeks time or so
(or more likely when it starts to squeal like a stuck pig again  )
either way at least this time i will be prepared with a stock of bearings and new locking washers etc etc.

I do like the fact that if you have a big hammer some spanners and a grease gun you can sort out most things on the Disco :cheesy:

We regularly see off-roaders wading through impossibly deep water but does this mean the bearings get a soaking too? if so it makes you wonder whether it should be a routine greasing operation? I'd never thought that the water could make its way to the bearings but :|

it shouldnt get in there, but if you have a 16 year old landy and leave it sat in 2 foot of water for about 3 hours , as i did then it sometimes gets in there, on the other 4x4 forum i use everybody who does serious wading checks and repacks the stub axles each couple of times out, some even do it every time they get it really wet along with changing the diff oils:shock:

I am happy now that no matter how deep the water i will be protected for at least a short while, where there is waterproof grease there can be no water  there is no air space left in there now, when i say i "packed the bearings" i mean i really PACKED the bearings,

I have the front diff oil seal to do along with the bearings when they arrive so im running a lovely mix of EP90 and ditch water in my diffs at the mo, but thanks to the leaky seal and weekly top ups i can say its a 90/10 mix of oil and water

after the allegedly fussy hdi this thing is like running a tractor as long as there is fuel water and grease it keeps going, all this with electric windows,7 leather seats, twin leccy sunroofs, awesome sound system and freezing cold aircon, oh and the ability to go just about anywhere,i really dont regret the change, but it is bloody thirsty :( .
