Tyres

Post by sirwiggum »

Is it just me or are tyres expensive these days?

The 406 needed 4 before I sold it on, each corner was £50 and that was standard rapier alloy tyres.

The other half's Fiesta needs a couple on her steelies, and the cheapest are around £45.

When I had low profile tyres they were only £40 a corner, and my last steel wheels Xantia were around £30 a wheel!

What happened that they went up in price so much?

I guess it's 'cos they're made out of oil. They're cheaper than here of course, I've been doing a price comparison and it's buy one get one free over there :(

It would be easier if you'd fit two tyres to her Fester yourself, then sand me 2/3 of the cost. Ta.

Just trying to find some tyre prices in Germany, they're looking a tiny bit cheaper than the UK. Then again it might be worth the extra 30 quid so I don't have to spend an hour trying not to mention the war...

You can find 2nd hand tyres on the 'net? Always check the date on them, they don't last forever even if they're not being used.

I hate spending a fortune on routine items, but wont skimp on things like brakes and tyres.

Would've been a couple of years ago I had the GTV, low profiles were about £35 a wheel. It ate through them - heavy twinspark up front, front wheel drive, driving to work past a construction site on the same road as a metal recycling plant.

When I took the 406 in I thought they were expensive cause the guy said they were an "oddball size".

Touch wood the Honda tyres seem fairly fresh, though 2 are stuck on with locking nuts that I'll need to take in and get broken off.

I was wondering about the "oddball size", for 195/65 15 there seems to be a whole lot more available at a cheaper price. It doesn't help that they're V rated too :( Actually, a lot of the tyres I've found recommendations for don't even come in 205/60 R15 91V...

Definitely new ones, they're the only things keeping it stuck to the road.

Possibly part worn as a temporary measure, to get it through an MOT or if trading in / scrapping soon. But would be wary of the "use by" / any cracks in the sidewall.

Her Fiesta flew through the MOT btw, just had to put a new numberplate bulb in. She's looking rid of it, great condition but she's like me and gets bored of driving the same thing :)

The last few motors i have needed tyres for have been a 525i a 740i and a discovery so all the talk of anything sub 150 quid a corner seems cheap to me

but as for the part worn argument, i think i would if i could see em properly before i had em fitted, otherwise i think for standard size and types i would rather go with new budget brand, sadly for me this hasnt been much of an option for a few years, by the way they are bloody pricey here too :(
