Latest mods to my 406 - colour-coding

Post by =|[PsychoPoet406]|= »

Some pics of Defiant showing its interior colour coding. The SRi interior is pretty frightful, but add some matching mats and spray some of the ugly black plastic parts on the dash, and it is surprising how well-sorted the car will look. Colour used is Peugeot Cherry Red Metallic (which is a body spray, but works ok on plastic after sanding and priming):

Now for the latest pics showing its colour-coded bumpers. I did all the spraying myself. Exterior colour is Peugeot Cossack Grey Metallic.

The car now gets *a lot* of attention. From the back in particular it now looks quite sporty. With a car like the 406 which has always sold in huge numbers, I find that the "street sleeper" look just does not cut it; people don't care about seeing yet another 406 no matter how well-sorted it is, *unless* you do something to make it stand out.

Nobody calls my 406 an old man's car!

I've been quoted £200 to replace my damaged exhaust valves. That includes supplying and fitting all the parts plus other work! My car has just covered about 1200 miles in one month with no actual problems.

It still idles roughly and usually struggles to start up in the morning (keeps turning over before finally catching but always starts first time). I can also smell fuel quite strongly from the engine when I first start the car, even when the engine is warm and it starts immediately.

I still need to fix a broken drop link (car wallows under hard cornering) and have my handbrake cable adjusted.

I start a new, highly-paid job next week. If things go according to plan, I should have enough cash to completely restore my car by January.

Nice one, I have some 'issues' with my car, it seems to be mentally ill recently with strange fault codes coming from the ECU and a wonky clutch and flywheel.

I have Heavy commitments with other stuff so my cars get fixed on an add hoc basis.

We shall no doubt be seing more of your Project as it developes over the next few months then.

The red bits inside look ghastly. Makes the interior look like that of a Nova. And we all know how crap they are.
No offence, just my opinion. Everyone's tastes are different.

Mind you, brill job on the colour coding of the rub strips.

I Like! I Like!

Not too fond of red or silver but nice work.

Did you remove the bumpers to paint them? What primer?

@Foxy

You didn't pry that off some old guys coupes' side or?? :P :P C'mon tell the truth now! lol
It's a great detail to your decent tuning style though!

Actually, members of this forum are the only people who have mentioned the interior re-colouring in a negative way. Everyone else seems to like it.

The standard interior of a 406 SRi is pretty nasty, and I think spraying the dash sort of "disguises" the horror of the trim by making it look like the whole thing is intentional. I've owned two 406s and I was sick of looking at cheapo black plastic. Ugh. *That* is what I'd expect to find in a Nova, not an elegant mid-range saloon.

=Technique for spraying bumpers=

I took one trim off to spray it but:

a) I had to snap the door clips off in order to glue the bump strip back. This is due to an apparent design flaw in the bump strip (it seems designed to come off but not go back on).

b) I damaged the paint on the bump strip while gluing it back on and it now needs a slight touch-up.

I left the other strips on to spray them. I used 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper followed by a layer of plastic primer (which is an absolutely essential requirement - DO NOT EVER try spraying components of your car without primer) and then a layer or two of paint.

Note about primer - I tried spraying without sanding or using primer to see what would happen. It doesn't work though; you need to use ten times as much paint and even then it comes off rather quickly. So there's no quick or cheap solution. If you want to paint your car, you need to summon the readies and buy the elbow grease :(

Isnt it strange how peoples 'modifying' tastes differ so wildly?
My car is Cossack grey and I would never in a million years paint my vents red!

Dude if you want some vents, I have a complete set and you can have them for nothing, please take them.
I will agree that the SRi interior is proper gash, but some nice leather seats will soon sort that.

I just knew that the bumpers and side strips wouldn't go back on as easily... Mine are already popping off and don't stay when pushed back...

Has anyone ever had to buy them new with new clips?

I'd like my vents in car color but don't wanna sand for hours... :cheesy:
How long did you spend on sanding the vents?

I love the different styles here. That red/grey is nice. And really.. anything is better than the black plastic look...
