It is a useful skill for those of us who care, and I did a useful night course in the local technical college last year to learn the basics of servicing and brakes etc.

But the likes of my prettier half, she wouldn't be one for getting under a car, and is happy enough for me to do it (and previously to pay a garage) to service the car.
No what I meant was some of us hate having other people work on our cars, I for one can't stand it!
So being given the option to do it ourselves is win win :)
Definitely. I would recommend the technical college leisure motor maintenance course I did, was fantastic.

As for being allowed to service your own car at the garage - they wouldn't allow it. 'elf an safetee innit?
Remember years ago my dad going to a DIY garage that had the ramps and all, you just paid to use them for an hour or two. Don't seem to be about anymore. Probably could never afford the insurance on such a venture.

a shared diy garage, i can imagine the biggest problem, you go to get the size 12 and in the socket set all you see is an empty hole.

I think you bring your own tools, but even so, your problem still holds. Even more so! :(

if they share the tools the size 12 would be there, just every other socket would be gone, or in the wrong place, as is the case on the farm with the tools there, some are in the box, some are in the toolbox on the tractors.
But health and safety would be a biggie, people using the car jacks then getting under them to change an exhaust, not safe.

My road tax just came in the post (and paid)...

$250ish AUD from memory - for the 2.0 petrol 406, so slightly more than what you pay. And seriously, UK roads are bliss compared to what we have here!

Oh and that's not including the speed cameras, fuel tax, tax tax (GST/VAT) and compulsory insurance which you have to cough up!

As of the 1st of April 2011 it will now cost me £260.00 for VED for the Coupe (it is £245 for a 2.0)

Fuel duty is now 57.95p per litre - fuel prices on average are £1.34 per litre, which also includes VAT on the cost of the fuel itself AND on the fuel duty - so we pay tax on our tax too.

Car insurance is also a legal requirement here, you must have at least "third-party only" cover. But there's no regulation on the insurance pricing, so the insurers can charge you whateverthefuck they want. I pay more than £700 per year on car insurance (fully comprehensive) - I'm 30, been driving since 2007, and have no criminal convictions or driving offences (even speeding tickets) to my name, no points on my license, and have only ever had one (very minor) at-fault accident.

No idea what a speeding ticket will cost you in the UK as I've never been caug...errr... received one

Speeding ticket for a regular up to 10mph over or so is £60 + 3 points (which you have to tell insurance about so they can up their premium the robbing gits). Or you can do an £85 death by powerpoint and not take the points.

Only if it's offered... which it isn't round here hence my 6 points
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

i thought i was going to get pulled in for speeding, the local village as you come out of it has a hill and going down it causes you to go quicker and to be economical i let the car do 35, there was the police sitting there at the bottom, just before the 30mph zone ends, i passed them and they pulled out although all they did was blast on past me and on the road at high speed.
sneaky place to sit at the bottom of a hill.

just like it is here eh Lozz?

all vehicles in Poland and TBA most of Europe are insured as the vehicle not the driver so as long as i give you my permission my insurance docs(must be carried by law) and my keys anybody can drive anybody else's car here. The price for such freedom? well on the scabby Arsetray its 1,100 zloty per year AC (fully comp) now at the current exchange rates of about 4.55 per quid thats £241 for the year, in my opinion not too bad.

The citroen on the other hand is looking a slightly more expensive proposition, I have set my annual mileage at about 40k km ( :? ) its fully insured for business use full European cover for the full term of the insurance, vehicle's value circa 95,000 zloty 2.2 bi-turbo with a few horses 4,400 zloty per year as i have zero no claims bonus in effect in Poland so about a grand, again i dont think its that bad at all, pricey? yes, too pricey? no, next year i will have 20% adding a further 10% each year to a maximum of 80% so soon enough it will become a better price.

As for road tax, we dont do that here, its all in the fuel price but we do have an additional tax of 2% of vehicle value whenever you buy a new or used car to be paid to your local council within 14 days of purchase.
