It is a useful skill for those of us who care, and I did a useful night course in the local technical college last year to learn the basics of servicing and brakes etc.
But the likes of my prettier half, she wouldn't be one for getting under a car, and is happy enough for me to do it (and previously to pay a garage) to service the car.
So being given the option to do it ourselves is win win
As for being allowed to service your own car at the garage - they wouldn't allow it. 'elf an safetee innit?
Remember years ago my dad going to a DIY garage that had the ramps and all, you just paid to use them for an hour or two. Don't seem to be about anymore. Probably could never afford the insurance on such a venture.
