Auto Dim interior mirror - Just fitted, now working

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

hehehe here it is ,

By the way, i'm a bit sceptical about it because, i feel that the sensor is slightly towards that big thing on the centre console, would it be a problem ? By the way again what's for that thing on the console ?

It'll work fine, I think it works off the difference in brightness between the two sensors anyway. The big lump of plastic on the windscreen covers the rain sensor for the wipers.

that wasn't my question, sorry for my poor english, i'll try to say in another words, the problem is, the sunroof console that have that glossy black thing next to the buttons and stuff, is in front of the sensor, so, even when beamed from behind the mirror will not dim because that glossy black this is making shadow to the sensor ...

You mean that the 2 sensors work in the difference of the brightness between them, how ? It's been 2 days now, and i haven't see the mirror dimming at all...maybe because that little thing is in front of the sensor...

best solution ?

putting the mirror upside down ? ( wouldn't this influence the other sensor on the back ? )

Thank you.

Couple of checks to do then. Put your finger over the sensor on the back of the mirror and then put another finger over the sensor on the front. By holding your finger over the sensor for a few seconds (or removing it, I can't remember), you should be able to see a difference in the brightness of the mirror. If you can't get the mirror to change by playing around with blocking off the sensors, then I suspect a probelm with the wiring.

You probably won't be able to swap the mirror the other way around, at least not easily.

but, wouldn't they only dim with light directed on the front sensor ? putting the sensors without light will make the mirror dim ? I'll have to check it ...will this work even in daylight ?

Thank you

This is the right glue to use for the mirror. It is really solid. Been using it for them rubber seals of the front doors too.

Cheers, may well invest in some of that stuff.

RayneR, yes it will work in sunlight. If you put your finger over the sensor on the rear of the mirror, it makes the mirror think that it's night and there's a car behind you.

Have a look on here at the pics of my dimming mirror. If you got a Laguna one like me, then the sensor on top works fine for the lights behind you.

hi ! i do have a laguna like mirror, but i just swapped only the mirror and not the whole thing, i have tested but not like you say here, i putted one finger in the rear sensor and one in the front, and nothing happened.

Doing your way, the mirror will instantaneously dim ? or it will be a delay ?

Shouldn't i placed the whole mirror ? Or it would be the same ? For position proposes only, because i think the black thing on the sunroof console is in front of the front sensor of the mirror, or i shouldn't worry about it because the sensor works fine anyway ?

I think i must test the sensor properly with the help of my brother with he's car beaming at me ...

It takes a couple of seconds to dim properly. If you look at the pics when I did it, I held my finger over the sensor on the back until the mirror dimmed.

Looking at your pics, your mirror looks to be higher up than mine as you've used the 406 mount whereas I've modified the Laguna one to fit, so you may be right with regards the sensor being blocked. Do the finger on the back test first though to check that the mirror is working and then test further from there.

hi, tested it, and the mirror is not dimming, the mirror was connected into one of the interior " minimum lights " , so when i turn them on the mirror will have power too, or i'm doing it wrong ? It was the garage that placed the mirror, or he didn't tested the polarity...

There's your problem then! Get the wiring sorted out and then see if it'll work or not.

Hi, after changing the wires it doesn't work either .. but i noticed something that i think is causing the problem. is that the mirror is connected to the ashtray light which the wires are tiny and the wires that come from the mirror are very large ( speaker ones ) , maybe the wires being large and very far from the mirror and the source of the power is very tiny, power gets lost on the wire ?

This is my only explanation, my friend has done into he's estate and he connected into the seal lights so when he turns the ignition on the mirror will get power automatic,

Thank you.

I took my power supply from an ignition live wire behind the courtesy light, that way the wire run was short and I knew that the power would be on when the ignition was on and not permanently live so as not to drain the battery.

The problem, is that my estate have sunroof which have this big plug that connects to the sunroof console, there is no single wires for the courtesy lights ( the wires is on the plug ) ...but i don't know which wires will have power when i turn the igniton on .. at my garage he said that it should work as it is, if that's so then my mirror is damaged, which i think is a bit hard ...

is there any elettrical scheme ?
