Catalytic Converter,type approved.HDI

I have been reading that if you have a 3/2001 onwards registered car you need to fit a "type approved" cat if you need to replace it at anytime,what would be the difference if you fitted a non "type approved" one as mine is a bit ropey and i have been offered a nearly new one from a 1999 hdi,it will physically fit but will affect the running of the car? As there is no Lambda sensor i can't see it affecting the engine management.Any ideas?

I fitted a "non-type approved" one to my HDI and it's ... OK. A bit louder than the original one with the whole but doesn't stink in the cabin and passed MOTs. There is no lambda sensor in diesels.

Although I have one fitted, I wouldn't recommend it due to it being louder! And illegal.

I've got an empty casing instead & it passes the MOT without problems. May have to replace it soon as I suspect my flexi section is leaking (again) , but I'm certainly not going to stump up for a type approved one.

Just de-cat it. You don't need them for the MOT.
