Intermittent Aircon

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Intermittent Aircon

Post by Doggy »

Noticed the a/c wasn't very cold yesterday, (but it had been fine earlier in the day). Went out again about 10 last night & it was working fine. Tried briefly on the way to work this morning - still OK, but wouldn't cut in on the way home.

Just what I need with a 400 mile round trip to Geordie land planned for Wednesday, :frown:

(In my mind the BSI had already been charged & found guilty of harbouring a faulty clutch relay, but best make sure).

Hooked up the pooter tonight & find BSI reporting, 'Permanent fault - Air conditioning compressor short circuit to earth'. Having seen these codes mysteriously vanish, I reset it, tried again, same result. Next, I disconnected the plug to the clutch, reset the fault again, but it came straight back again! Checked there wasn't a short between the cables to the clutch, (OK), then resolved to reset the BSI & see what happens.....

I can never remember the procedure, (you know the turn the ignition on through the window, while standing on one leg singing La Marseillaise backwards at midnight, or whatever it is), surmising there must be an option for Pug techs to do less/charge more and hey presto, there's an option to 'Reset after state change', or words to that effect.

Fearless Doggy clicked that option, (more in hope than expectation) and it seems to have worked.

We'll see if it keeps going.

Fingers crossed doggy, the aircon needs regassing on the tubby and it's only when it's not working that the weather turns hot!
Not that I'm bothered now, the aircon is lovely in the new car! :cheesy:

It was perfect all day today - 7 hours & 450 miles of blissful, air conditioned comfort plus 44.8 mpg. Good Dogmobile. :cheesy:

Outside temp. was up to 29 before I encountered the tropical storm that hid most of Yorkshire from the southbound A1this afternoon.

If anyone is having this fault still, I found the solution (bud did not apply it yet).
Several thread suggest that the cause of the compressor not kicking in can be:
1- air conditioning ECU, to be fixed by an expert or replaced (ahem... call Ade1122!)
2- BSI not giving the start command to the aircon ECU.

Well the second point seems to be the most common one. There is a relay which can become dry and stop working for a day or two, especially if it's hot (that's obviuos, it doesn't work only when you need it to...)

This relay is easy and cheap to replace. Here's a couple of threads testifying this:
http://www.peugeotcentral.co.uk/ftopic-7042.html
http://www.ilexa.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4924.0

And a short guide, sadly in italian, on how to do that. You can use a translator or ask me to translate the most crucial parts:
