At my witts end...

Post by Bailes1992 »

Right those who went to the meet this weekend will know I've been complaining about my car.

Two problems, one the steering started shaking at speed half way up to birmingham and two when I been braking and cornering hard I been getting clicks and clunks from the front suspension.

So I looked at the car today, the subframe was LOOSE! and was missing a bolt. So went down to the hardware shop, one new bolt and took the rest out, threadlocked and fitted again. Not a problem but the last one to remove my subframe was my mechanic while I had a new steering rack.

Then I thought I'd look at the brakes, I stripped down my brakes a few days ago and noticed the top silder bolt was loose, didnt think much of it and just thought maybe the mechanic who did my steering rack haden't tightened them up fully. Again I looked at the brakes and the slider bolt, well I pulled it out wiht my fingers. Confused I looked at the thread in the hub to find it has all been stripped out  So basically my calipers only been held on with one silder bolt.

Anywho I didn't panic, put the car back together and had a think. Got someone to give me a lift to the scrappy and got a second hand hub with a fecked wheel bearing. Going to get a sexy new wheel bearing from motorfactors tommorow and see if I can get a garage to press it in for me. Then i got the fun task of changing me hub :(

I've had enough.

Hub with a good bearing £60.
Hub with a bad bearing £20 + £40 for a new bearing and £10 to get a garage to press it in. Extra tenner for piece of mind I'l have a good bearing :)

Hopefully this will be it for a while. Hopefully it will be a nice smooth job tommorow. Not sure how to split the ball joint though?

I was going to suggest you change the car.

It is well beyond the Ford built-in-obsolescence point.

Why is nothing simple. Walked 2 miles with a very heavy hub to motorfactors, got the bearing and walked a further mile to the garage to have it pressed in. Turned out to be the rear bearing instead of the front one. Another mile to motorfactors to make sure I get the right bearing. Then it turned out the driveflange on my new hub is f*cked so goto take off my old hub, take it to the garage so they can remove the drive flange on the old hub and fit it to my new one :(

Couldn't get the balljoint pinch bolt to budge. Got the bolt off one end, couldn't get the actual bolt out though. Did give the ball joint a few wacks with the seperator but it didn't budge. Slung it all back together and going to get a mobile mechanic out just to get the hub off and fit the bearing to the new hub. I get reassemble it all then :)

What you need is C4

(and a detonator).
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Avoid the 1.6 in such a big car, the 2.0 or 2.2 HDi

The plastics are indeed plasticy in the C5 ;)

Xantia feels more solid! Especially the XUDTs

Probably won't get one. They're abit expensive. You can get 20k-40k 3 year old one sfor £7k to £10k.
This time next year I should have £4000 in the bank saved up and my car will be worth about a grand. Unless I want to take out a loan or finance.
Also with my current insurer (Who I get a AWESOME deal with) limits me to 120bhp. Weather that will move when I renew in November, we'll have to see.
I'm hoping they will had 20bhp as that means I can step up to a 2.2 HDi 406. Or even a Coupe :D
