The easiest solution is a media centre PC, I put one in the bedroom last year and it's really handy.
Managed to pick up an ex-office Dell desktop machine with Windows 7 pro for £45, put a tv tuner in it and a 500 GB hard drive I had spare and Bob's your uncle.
I've got all my music on it and loads of DVD rips stored so don't need any discs, plus you can put any recored TV to disc fairly simply should you need to.
If you want blu-ray just slap a blu-ray drive in (may have to upgrade the graphics a little)

Dell desktops make good media centres as they're small, quiet and very energy efficient.
Media centre in 7 or Vista will wake the machine up for recording then send it back to sleep as well.

I tend to avoid Dell from corporate experience. They are the Vauxhall/Ford of the computing world (ie. componentry on a budget, not what is best for engineering).

Build your own PC from a MiniITX board and a silent fan.

They're a bit more expensive but I've been looking at the new Commodore 64, even a barebones and building up my own system.

You can get satellite receiver cards to watch freesat or Sky. Don't know much about this, but one of the guys I work with has done it.

I used a Dell as it was small, quiet and cost £45, if the budget stretches I agree buy better components. But if my Dell breaks I'll just go and get another one for the same money.
My main PC I built from scratch using premium components as a gaming rig, so far I've thrown about a grand at it but don't tell the Mrs!!!!

I purchased an item on ebay, but it was not a caddy, which i should have bought it was this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320383801768? ... 096wt_1156
it hasn't came with drivers, but worse than that the power adaptor i plugged into the mains and it blew up before even connecting it to anything, huge big sparks zappy electrical noise and a bad smell and just out of the box. The joys of cheap junk off ebay :cheesy:
But i think just as a temporary job i can use an old PSU i have lying around for the power and try and get the drivers somewhere, them minidisks dont even work in my laptop.

the PSU didn't work they must need a signal from a motherboard to send power, but i have put the hard drive into the dvd recorder again, but just connected up the power and kept on the usb bit.
To scotty the light blew straight away, i hadn't the hard drive inserted into the power it blew on its own, that how good the quality was.

With something like this do you leave feedback?

Just leave some negative feedback, seeing as they did refund as you returned it. Some sellers I've used in the past still expected positive feedback even though the item is defective.
