Post by ControlFreakz »

Hello, i am repairing a coupe that i bought needing a new lump and im looking for replacement.

looking for a straight replacement for the 2.0 16v coupe engine. the car is 1999 but i think they are the same engine throughout :?:
would prefer it to be within the essex/suffolk/kent area but ill consider most things, i can pick up and pay cash.

Hi there. From what I gather, there were actually three versions of the 2.0 16v petrol engine fitted to the 406 series. The XU10J4R engine was fitted to early 406s, and was replaced in 1999 by the EW10J4. The EW10J4 lump was apparently revised at some point afterwards, but I can't figure out when that was or what was done to it.

Basically your problem is that because your car is a 1999 model, there are two engines it could potentially have had in it. You need to know which one it had before you buy one - the XU10J4R lump will have a completely different ECU to the EW10J4, different sensors, wiring, etc, and it'll be a pain in the ass to go from one to the other.

If you find the car's VIN you might find that you can get the exact model of your engine from Peugeot's ServiceBox website - http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/ - (requires free registration), or you could post it here and someone else can look up the engine model on your behalf.

As for where to get one from, your best bet would be to speak to Adrian Bingham (ade1122) who operates a breakers' yard specializing in the 406 Coupe. You can find ade1122 over at the Peugeot 406 Coupe Club website, here: http://www.406coupeclub.org

to be honest, its my first 406 coupe to work on, it seems like a solid and clean car but shame about the engine sieze.... is it a common thing?

Depends on what you mean by "seize" - the 406 is unfortunately prone to hydrolock (water coming in to the cylinders), because Peugeot put the engine air intake down by the left-side front wheel, and even more so on the Coupe because the car sits lower to the ground than the saloon or estate does.

It's not a hugely common problem (i.e. not bad enough for Peugeot to issue a recall to move the intake somewhere else) but when it does happen it will ruin your whole day.

If that's not what you mean by seize, then what kind of issue did you mean?

Generally, Peugeot's petrol engines are very reliable, and assuming the car is given a proper service every year, will probaby outlive the human race. The ones in the 406 are pretty good - I've had two, a 1.8 petrol saloon (written off by an anonymous White Van Man) and my current 2.2 Coupe, and the engines have been absolutely fine on both.

cheers,
well i bought the car off a customer as he was driving it to work at 80mph, he said 'a light' came on but he was late for work so kept driving, then it slowed to a halt and = game over. since then ive got it back to my workshop and had a quick look, the engine was totally dry of oil the dipstick has shot out the top, the coolants all but gone and i couldnt turn the crank with my metre bar, basically hes run it dry, ignored the pressure light and crunch, engine overheat and sieze. (bellend) i was just gonna stick a new lump in it and be done with it, its a very tidy car, red, owned by a squadren leader before him lol, basically it has had no expense spared (including a main dealer reciept for the rear brake shoes @£1000  ) and then it was bought by a knob 30kmiles ago who had no idea.... anyway, ive posted on that other forum but not been approved yet so.... waiting game..... if i get a good working engine for under 200, ive made a little profit which is what i hoped for as the kids gotta eat lol

You'd be right - the EW10 J4 engine would have appeared in:

Citroen C4 and C5
Peugeot 206, 306, 307, 406 and 407

If it's the older XU10 J4R engine, you could source one from:

Citroen Xantia
Peugeot 306, 406, and 806

I wonder how easy it would be to source / fit an EW10 J4S engine - those were fitted to the Peugeot 206 RC, 307 Feline and the Citroen C4 VTS, and had a 177 HP power output (better than my 2.2 EW12 J4!) - could make for an interesting project car, and quite possibly one you might want to keep rather than sell on.

At any rate, Ade1122 is definitely the man to speak to concerning a replacement 2.0 lump for any age of Coupe.

Your customer is a complete fuckwit.

The moving parts of the engine basically melted due to a lack of lubrication. I wonder if he ever checked the levels of anything other than the petrol tank

The engine code is in the vin/chassis number: it will start VF38C and then the next 3 are the crucial characters. You don't really need the engine from a coupé, or even, as has been pointed out, a 406.

well i would prefer that you hear it running before i take it out so you 100 per cent ok with it
the engine would be complete eg manifolds, starter, alternator etc
if you come up i dont thing it will take long to get it out as the rest of the car will be scrap so can cut the front off so i reckon about 1hr to get it out.you can have the box as well if you need it but it does need a clutch in it.
pm me a offer if you intrested.
