Depends on a few things. For BIG screens you want plasma, but be aware that although they give the most vibrant colours, they're not suitable for hooking up to a console to play games on since they suffer quite badly from screen burn. They're also known to fade with use.

LCD tech has been coming on in leaps and bounds recently. My next telly will be a HDTV (proper 1080p, not some downscaled crap) LCD, but that's probably not going to be this year

42" is right about the changeover point, up to that you want an LCD, over that you want a Plasma. To be fair the newer Plasmas have had a lot of the previously reported faults such as burn in and fade improved greatly, but LCDs don't suffer these problems at all.

We had the same dilema earlier in the year, with a budget of a grand and a bit we had 3 options, 32" LCD, 42" Plasma or a 50" Sony Rear Projection LCD. I was quite impressed with the RP, much better than the old huge RP tellys and both picture (with a HD feed) and sound were excellent, although still lacking a bit of brightness and suffering from quite poor viewing angles, but the clincher was that we decided it was just too big. Anyway we ended up with a 37" Toshiba LCD that we had on sale at £400 less than list price. Now it's HD ready but we don't currently have a HD signal, and from normal viewing distances the picture quality is excellent, but I've noticed that if you move closer you can really start to see the grain of the standard definition signal. I'd think twice about going bigger than this without a HD feed. Looking at the HD demos in Currys the picture quality is outstanding right up to the biggest (62" I think??) plasma they've got in the shop, but that one is something like 8 grand!!!

Hi,

Keep away from plasma screens they cannot produce the resolutions LCD screens can, as for which LCD (as go make etc) I would read some reviews on the internet and make the decision you’re self (and after reading the reviews go and have a look them – at curry’s etc).

But watch out as “HDTV ready” Screens means that the screen can display the lowest resolution this may be good enough for most people but if you want the best screen you need to aim for the 1080p, I am waiting until the 1080p come down in price instead of buying a second rate screen IMO ( see table).

1. 720p - 1280x720 progressive
2. 1080i - 1920x1080 interlaced
3. 1080p - 1920x1080 progressive

Andy

Note: the bigger the screen the higher resolution you need, or it will look grainy, an LCD is basically made of tonnes of little dots (called pixels ) the more pixels you have the sharper the image ( so from the HDTV ready table above, 720 would look worse compared to the 1080p as it has less pixels) another thing to think about is the brightness and contrast – which is basically down to the backlight which illuminates the pixels from either behind or from the sides hence my recommendation about going to look at them in a shop before buying cheaper of the internet.

Just an opinion, but we've got a 42" plasma. The reason we got it was "biggest bang for bucks", and it won hands down. Been totally happy and impressed with it for the last 4 months. I'm not bothered with HD personally, but I'm the bloke who wasn't that impressed with the difference in picture quality of DVDs over good ol' VHS.

Well.... as Dai said Plasmas have greatly improved over the last few years.. The only problem is the weight of a plasma unit, if you want to wall mount it, then a 42" plasma is a no go, unless you have a really good high tensile support, if you are planning on moving anytime soon, then plasma's are a pain, you have to transport them ever so carefully to avoid damage.

A Plasma screen will reproduce better blacks and shadowing, they tend not to suffer like previous versions to picture burn.. Both LCD and Plasma suffer from fading, it is estimated that both displays will lose half of their luminosity* within 10 years, which is why they come with 5 years warranty.

The thing is, and this is the thing, that despite what people say or recommend, everyone see things differently, vision is perceptual and so the best way to go, is down to the shops, see which looks good to you and offers the spec you require… then visit the internet to find it cheaper :o)

Try Money Saving Expert for online discount codes for a TV, see how things turn out.

HTH :)
