You can get a brilliant 2.2HDi saloon which:
- is a beautiful looking car
- handles well
- is confortable
- has a brilliant help forum
- is a very practical car with lots of space inside
- you know common problems and failures well
- there are lots of them so parts are quite cheap, also Ade1122 can offer parts for the engine and whatever is shared with the coupé
- is a lovely solid engine
- remaps to ~180hp
- still manages 50-55mpg defapped
- defapping is really cheap
- it's really cheaper than whatever you may be wanting to buy right now. A perfect example sells for 1500-2000£ where you live, add 1000£ to get it perfect and spot on from all points of view, and for 2500-3000£ you have a more beautiful car, lovely engine and lovely ride.
You save lots of money that could be invested in fixing the car whenever it needs it, 2000£ can fix whatever you want for 4 years or even more.
Insurance. Otherwise I would go buy myself a 2.2 HDi SE.
My 90bhp Rapier is £2165 if I renew right now.
The Mondeo ST TDCi is £1765 and the 407 Coupe is around the same price too.
aA 2.2 HDi 406 is... Wait for it...
Wait....
£2987.65
That is insane. I thought prices in Italy were high. Well they are as much as yours are, but luckily a left-handed politician some years ago made a law for which I, son, can have the first car with my parent's insurance class (usually 1 if they did not have any accident) instead of entering with the standard 18 class (if you have no claims you gain a class every year, so it took you 17 years to pay the least money).
For this reason now I may be able to pay 600€ a year on the 406 instead of 3500€ (I still pay 330€ because it is insured under my father's who is retired and pays less). Thank you thank you thank you thank you Bersani!
At least there is one thing in which it Italy we are not the worst of the continent.

Crazy! Lovely car by the way. My mother's did easily 70mpg and even more. (yes it's true!)
If it's true 306s are cheaper why not get one? It's quite confortable, much more fun than a 406 or Mondeo or 407, cheap to run. The 2.0 90bhp is a well known engine and mods and remaps well (you may add an intercooler for example), gives exeptional economy. The car retains the 406's/Xantia's rear wheel passive steering and was the driver's hatchback back in its times. A lovely looking car too. Not much electrics so not much to fix.
Of course I seem to understand you love the "big car feeling", which is why you won't go for a 306 I guess.
