Tell us about your Crashes

Post by Welly »

Was driving home last night thinking "I haven't crashed for a while" and it got me wondering about the subject in general...

So here, list your crashes/near misses in your driving career.

Please note: I understand this may be a sensitive subject to some as car accidents can bring about very sad loss of life. I don't mean to drag anything like this up for us all to read on here - what I wanted was stories or even pics of incidents we've had but lived to tell the tale; embarrassing or otherwise.

I've been driving for 24 years:

1991 - was 'testing' the brakes on my Vauxhall Chavalier and the rears locked first (dodgy bias valve) pulled something akin to a massive handbrake turn at 40mph over a grass verge and kissed a tree fairly hard

2006 - head-on with a Lorry who was on the wrong side of the road (Polish Driver) wrote the car off quite a lot :o
Cars in my care:
2021 Kia Spottage 1.6 Pez Turbo Dual Clutch Gearbox Trickery
2013 Renner Twingo - donkey work

Only one, last year, was driving my mum's clio on left hand tight turn, when the rear suddenly decided to go for a drink, oversteering like hell. Don't ask me why, I don't know.
I kept it in the road avoiding a frontal impact with a car coming the other way but then the rear regained grip all of a sudden and the car went the other way to the right, on the metal barrier (guard-rail we call them). New front end. 3300€ just for the new bumper, new wheel (tyre was fine), new wing and some small parts, headlight was fine. And that was on a car which costed 10331€s... thiefs.

I am happy I managed to avoid the frontal impact tho...

Passed my test back in 2007. My first car was a 1.2 petrol Mk.1 Clio. Within the first week of buying my first car, I had a small bump with a Vauxhall something-or-other, possibly a Vectra (dull boring grey repmobile). I was turning right at a T-junction - looked left, nothing, looked right, nothing, started going forward as I looked back to the left and I hit the brakes - the guy had come along from the left and I didn't manage to stop in time.

The Clio came to a rest with the bumper pressing up against the guy's door (almost no impact speed at all) resulting in £800 worth of paintwork damage and a nice gentle dent in the guy's door. My car had black plastic bumpers, which received a small and insignificant scuff. Thing is, I didn't have £800 (that's more than my car had cost), so it had to go on the insurance. Pisser.

No other crashes (other than the one I have mentioned on here previously during various rants about car insurance firms)

Well this is embarrassing isn't it?

Passed my test in 1996

Mercifully, all rather superficial when you consider the scope for calamity.

2002ish. Me: Renault 5. Them: Golf. I was looking to see if junction is clear to pull out of (it was). They were in front of me but decided to stop. I went into back of. New headlight on Renault, new rear bumper for Golf. Dealt with outside of insurance.

2006 ish: came off a roundabout onto a clear suburban dual carriageway and the silly bitch in front of me decided to stop to let a parked car pull out. Me: current 406. Them: Corsa. She gave false details which I can still remember: Marianne Fazackerley, 100 Ridgacre Road, Birmingham. That's how I got the dint in the bonnet, and since replaced it (earlier this year!) with the scratched bonnet which I decided was less embarrassing.

2007: two very near misses in snow on the same day. First: coming out of junction, turned wheel, nothing happened, stopped by kerb at opposite side of road, fortunately it was a quiet road. Second: going down hill, car stuck coming up and abandoned in middle of road (morons), ditch to left of road, couldn't stop, managed to get past without hitting car or going into ditch. After the snow melted I noticed a tree stump on the verge part way in the ditch which I was excpetionally lucky to have missed.

2008: car was hit when parked outside my flat. It was somebody coming out of the flats car park, but nobody owned up. That's why the passenger door doesn't fit properly.

2010: Shaggy Calf Lane in Slough. Was a bit icy. I stopped, Renault Meganne behind slid. No visible damage to me, Renault looked a right mess. Went through insurance, but I didn't actually claim for anything. Recorded as not at fault, but not until after the bastards hiked by premium because of an accident being recorded and fault not yet having been assigned.

Yesterday: left work late and barrier going out of business park came down on me. Management company haven't called me back, work have agreed to chase it...

Other than yesterday, I could have avoided them all -- but the other party could also have avoided them all. So while I am stupid: so is every bugger else. So nerr.

My first was in 1973, a much-modded 1962 Capri, which I parked upside-down, (having completely forgotten a contraflow-type diversion over the bridge on the opposite carriageway). No-one hurt, car scrapped, but got more for the bits........

In 1986, I assisted a local farmer by putting another opening through one of his hedges, thus finally solving the handling problems of my gleaming low-mileage '81Chavalier Sportshatch. No-one hurt, car scrapped, but got nearly full cost back on the insurance.......

Finally, (I hope), in 2002, one of those roundabouts, (with the built-up concrete chevron-covered walls around it), ran out in front of the 'Wild Rover', (1990 216 GTI twin-cam). No-one hurt, car scrapped, but unfortunately this had been the wife's car when she was still driving and we'd kept it as it was posher than mine. To this day, I still get grief about destroying 'her' car.

May seem like a lot of incidents, but I've been driving for 40 years and at the last count, had covered over million miles.

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I passed my test in the winter and had the fiat at the time, there was a few occasions where i slid into hedges or straight off the road into fields, i quickly started using the handbrake to turn the car in the ice
The most damage crash was on the tractor i had the rotavator on the back, come to the end of the field and pressed in the clutch but with the machine still spinning the tractor went straight on ahead through the fence and into a ditch.

A few weeks back i was in a sprinter van my friend went to go round the corner and it just understeered, the ABS didn't work and it just went straight into a rock, it cracked the sump and damaged the steering rack.

1992 - Fiat Oh-no - Lorry went up its @rse on a slip road. The car in front of me went to pull away then changed her mind, I stopped but the lorry didn't.
1994 - Fiat Oh-no - I bumped a car that braked suddenly; luckily no damage to his but mine got a crease in the bonnet
1994 again - Fiat Oh-no - smacked into a column in a multistory carpark when I mis-judged a parking space; it dislocated the headlight & indicator. Repaired with lots of cable ties.
1998 - Honda CB500 - Coming round corner and caught a load of soil spilled on the road! Minimal damage
2001 - Honda CB500 - Filtering through traffic I caught a pothole and went into the side of an old metro, Minimal damage
2001 - VW Polo - Indicating & turning right on a mini roundabout and the pillock delivering pizzas in his car "didn't see me". Car written off
2003 - Honda CB500 - Indicating right into a filter lane and a p1ssed tw@t decides to overtake me as I make my move. Kicked out the back of the bike & I went for a slide down the road. Rear seat cowl smashed, RH footpeg hanger, RH handlebar bits & bobs and front brake master cylinder smashed.
2007 - Honda CB500 - Caught a diesel spill coming into a roundabout in the p1ssing rain. I went for a slide, the bike was written off (uneconomical to repair  ) so I duly bought it back and fixed it for £60. Damage was hole in genny cover and LH handlebar bits and bobs. Oh and my waterproofs were ripped to shreds, leathers were fairly unscathed!
2012 - Volvo V40 - Reversed into by a Fire Engine
1996 406 1.8LX Got a bad case of hydro lock!
1996 406 Executive 2.0 Turbo XU10J2TE No longer hangin' on in there :(
1997 Honda CB500V
2003 Volvo V40 1.8 GDi SE killed by a nutter in a beemer 5 series
2008 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium X

Lots of bumps and scrapes but what do expect driving a BT van around North London for about 15 years? I suppose the main ones are:

Driving a Ford A Series with a broken road spring back to the yard (seemed quicker than waiting for them to come out and realise they couldn't fix it in the road  ), I squeezed it through a gap not realising that it was actually driving slightly sideways and took the side off a fairly new Mazda.

Hurtling down a back road in the A to the strains of Metallica, a women in a can't remember panicked at the sight of me heading towards her, swerved into a parking space and slammed into a parked car. Ok, an accident I wasn't involved in but caused

Once more in the A, trying to get out onto the NCR in heavy traffic, I was edging out when I saw an artic coming towards me, giving all the impression of having no desire to stop. I had a quick squint in the mirrors, couldn't see anything behind me, started backing up and BANG! One slightly shorter Audi coupe.

Finally in the A, I was turning right from a side road into Seven Sisters. I couldn't see past the back of a truck on my left but I could see the lights on the pelican crossing further down on the left, which were just changing to amber. I figured I had a good few seconds so I punched it - BANG!! Guy in a Craptina doing a drag start, totalled both vehicles, the Craptina just about drove under the A.

Once one of the senior techs was off and I was told to drive his truck, which was a Ford Cargo cabling lorry. I wasn't happy about it but I didn't have a choice. They then gave me a job in Crouch End, which if you don't know it, is a busy high road surrounded by tiny twist one way streets. Finding nowhere to park (of course), I was just going round and round in circles. Finally I misjudged a corner and took a parked Mini out - I saw bits of car flying up in the air in the mirror. They never asked me to drive it again. The next time the tech was off they gave the Cargo to another guy, who wrote it and 3 cars off.

In the real world...
I'm sure you've all seen the pics of my first car, a Marina, that I hit a motorway sign with and tore in half.

In a Craptina of my very own, I was caning it up a hill when a guy in another Craptina pulled out on me. He handed my a wad of cash but I was more concerned about my mate in the passenger seat who decided to have an epileptic fit. Roughed out with a hammer, sprayed with primer to match the rest of the heap.

1979 Moss green Avenger estate 1.6 automatic, I was waiting to turn right onto the Epping New Road (long, straight and wide so used to be the place to see how fast your car goes), Cavalier coming from my left, nothing from my right, wait for the Cav to pass, start pulling out - he turned without indicating and cut across the front of me - I put a lovely crease down the rhs of his car, the Avenger didn't have a mark on it.

Ashtray estate, I was coming onto a big roundabout on a dual carriageway (the sort that has a forest on it), looked to my right and I could just about see a Vitara a long way off so pulled on. She was obviously caning it though because by the time I'd gone a quarter of the way round she'd caught me up. She was in the r/h lane, I was in the left. Trouble was I was in the way of her exit but she just tried to drive through me, wiping out my passenger door with her bull bar. Obviously her fault, she was almost in hysterics so I waited with her until she'd calmed down and sent her on her way. It ended up in court and she lied her arse off, the idiot magistrate said if you pull onto a roundabout and a car hits you it's always your fault. I'm still angry about that one,

Same car, different roundabout. Waiting behind a Dayoo Matis to pull out into the traffic, a big gap came up and the Dayoo started to pull out. I followed but for some reason he stopped with inevitable consequences - made a fair mess of the back end of the Dayoo but the Astra was unmarked.

On the bike:
CX500 (somebody had to),June 23rd 1992, riding to work, same journey I'd made loads of times. Some guy in an Audi screamed up to a junction on my left looking like he wasn't going to stop, so I pulled out away from him and went round a r/h bend on completely the wrong line. The back wheel clipped a pot hole and I completely lost it, ending up riding onto the pavement and hitting a lamp post which took everything of the lhs of the bike - crashbar, indicators and my leg, dragging me off the bike. Left leg broken in 3 places, almost pulverised my tibia below my knee. Dislocated right hip, broken left thumb. Via my union I sued the local council for the pothole, the investigators said it was partly my fault for being fairly a inexperienced rider but I used the pay out to put the deposit on my first house. I was off work for 2 weeks short of two years. I have a lumpy leg, cruciate problems and arthritis, and my left thumb is shorter than my right.

I rode up to the British Motorcycle Club's member's rally at the East of England showground in Peterborough on my TDM. Inside the showground, girlfriend on the back, I was riding along past a load of parked cars when I saw a marshal off to my right frantically waiving his arms around like a loon. I was too busy looking at him to see the car pulling out on my from my left, who t-boned me, leaving an interesting bruise on my leg. Scuffed fairing, broken brake lever. He gave me a load of baloney details and the police didn't do anything because they reckoned it happened on private land and out of their jurisdiction. The bastards

Couple with bikes:

1. Didn't have a visor, and suddenly hit a hail storm - was stinging my eyes, and clipped a wing mirror on a mk1 cavalier and span out into the middle of the road - paid the guy £25 for a mirror
2. guy indicated left, and then turned right as I passed him, and front wheel went into his front wheel and flipped me over his bonnet - he admitted liability

Cars:
Marina GT - the wife, when we were courting, left me a message at work to say not to bother meeting her for dinner - she just got up late, I didn't know that, and took it the wrong way, went for a blast for my dinner break, and found some recently re-gravel'd road, and had some sideways action on some of the bends, only I over corrected on one whilst trying to power through it, and went through someone's wall, and hit a tree
Mini 1275GT - showing off to a couple of birds, me and a mate picked up, went blasting down a un tarmac'd road, hit a bump, took off, and came down right before a raised man hole cover, and took the sump out, and banana'd the car.

Work vehicles:
Citroen C15 van - heading down to the M1/M69 roundabout, had no one in front of me, when the lights changed to red, so broke for the line, when the woman in the mazda 323 in front decided at the last second to change lanes. Didn't have enough room to break, but the police who turned up a few seconds later, just said it was 5-/5-, whereas I blamed her for moving over at the last second, but alas, I hit her up the rear, so technically to blame :frown:
LDV400 - heading down the east lancs road, I braked as I had done at all the other red lights since getting off the motorway, but at one, I ended up losing traction, and skidded into the back of a car
Iveco Cargo - shouldn't say this, but not 100%, as I didn't see the taxi in front brake, but ran up the back of this pug E7 taxi on the A5, and I "may" have fell asleep at the wheel, as like I say, I just don't remember him braking - maybe I didn't and maybe his brake lights weren't working, but can't be 100%

I think that's about it, in 26 years of motoring
1999 D8.5 HDi GLX - Sold :(

2007 Mondingo Zetec - I seek forgiveness :( Bring back my 406

November 1998 7.15 in the morning driving to work in my Nova, two pairs of headlight came over the brow of the hill in front with a split second to react i decided hedge would seem like the soft option. Swerved went through the hedge and barrel rolled down the bank into the field. By the time i had climbed out as it stopped upside down and got back up to the road only a Christian Salveston wagon was there. Guy overtaking the truck never stopped. Nova written off.

1999 Hot bird 8) in a Fiat Uno drove straight through a cross roads into the side of my 114 GTa. She got out sobbing her eyes out saying "i didn't realize there was a junction here". i tried to pull her months later in a night club but failed. Door and wing required.

2002 Pulled up at two lanes of stationary traffic on the A64 York ring road in my Saxo. Boy racer in Escrote behind used my Saxo to stop rather than is brakes. Bumper, tail lights required.

2005 Driving my works Merc Sprinter toeing a 1.5 tonne JCB mini digger around a roundabout way to fast. Digger jumped off trailer into the path of a Rover 25. Cab straightened and new glass for JCB.

Sometime in 2006 Pissed up lad on a Scooter didn't see i had stopped and decided he wanted a good look of the underside of my Ibiza Cupra. Bit of painting for rear bumper thats all.

Plus plenty of other little coming togethers driving for work, its surprising how invisible a white Mercedes Sprinter and trailer is.

Didn't realise how old doggy was

You lot are maniacs  Touch wood in the millions of years i've been driving i've only ever been in accidents as a passenger, first one i was about 13 and my dads audi 80 got side swiped.

Next one an ex girlfried of mine took a scenic route over the mountain to avoid the police in her renault 5 gt turbo... result i was picking glass out of my forehead for about 3 months (drunken old bat)

Next one was quite funny a mate of mine was dropping me off to get my leg over (dont happen much these days i married her) and a sheep came from nowhere into the front of his cortina... Sheep ran off i'm sure he was laughing but the cortina suffered multiple traumas involving steam everywhere and basically a fooked front end.

I almost got in a sh*t load of trouble following my mate to a bike rally two years ago though it had been raining so his son came in the car with me, we came off a roundabout and my mate shot off like a rocket so like a kiddy i booted it just before realising two lanes turned into one (very rapidly).... I still aint lived it down his son winds me up terrible over it... Thats not to mention the beeps and looks i was getting off other motorists
