Now I just need to swap it over... without upsetting the BSI. (I've finally got a new radiator fan too, but for exactly this reason I'm getting a pro to swap that.)
Oh yes: what's the mileage algorithm? I've heard it's either the sum or the maximum of the two. The maximum should be OK because I'm on 192k now and I doubt the donor was on more (although it was very very shabby).
Normally the BSI and instrument cluster will compare the mileages and then the highest one will replicate to the other.
So is BSI is on 120k and cluster is on 140k then the BSI will update to 140k, if you then decided to put in a cluster with less miles on that would update to 140k too.

Is it sufficient to remove only the + terminal (which has a handy clip) or must both terminals be disconnected?
(I discovered that disconnecting the + then discovering that the - is not 10mm and I don't have a small enough spanner, then putting it back rest the date and time and auto lights.)
When i remove the BSI and ECU i've got a routine i stick to just incase:
Unlock car, pop bonnet up
Shut the door and leave the car for 3 minutes for the BSI to shutdown
Remove both battery terminals (i hold them together for 10 seconds to drain residual charge)
Then remove ECU/BSI
I had them out a few times and just don't want to risk damaging them

Bought an 8mm spanner.
Followed battery procedure.
Swapped dashes over.
Haven't broken anything
However, oil temperature gauge not working
I guess either the sensor isn't present (for some reason I was certain it was) or it needs Planet to enable it.

but this is all it has to say about disconnecting the battery. Presumably the "slight difficulties" will be fixed (they hope) with a BSI reset.
Success eventually - Planet has far too many confusing options.
It seems you need to tell the car that it has both the temp gauge and the sender unit. I suppose it makes sense as you are telling the system there is a multiplex source and sink and they both dont need to exist, but surely the system could have been designed to allow all sources to put data on the bus and all sinks to accept data off the bus without explicitly having to option them.
However a useful option was found today, masked by an obvious mis-translation. There is a way to turn off "economy mode" it seems - show room mode disables "fuel saving mode". A mis-translation perhaps?
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.
Yeah, it works perfectly.
Was most of the way to the M11 before it got up to 90, and it stayed there down the A10 until I got to the dual carriageway and got my foot down and it crept up to 115. Stayed up at 115 cruising at 60 to 65 down the A1. M25 was busy so sat behind a wagon and it meandered down to 90.
Will be interesting to see how warm it gets on the commute into work.
