406 2.0HDI 110BHP 'W' reg - wont start

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I reckon the lift pump's toast but it's worth checking the double relay as they do give problems. It'd probably be easiest to check for 12 volts at the pump - you're looking at wires 1201 & M120 (which is the earth) - connect a meter across it, turn the key to run and see what the meter says.

Tell me about your migraines Lozz: a few year back I was having one or two a week, now I get one perhaps once a year. I've had to sort my cholesterol and triglycerides out, I've had acupuncture and I've learned to avoid the triggers (I can't remember the last time I ate any chocolate) but first I had it properly diagnosed as migraines 'cos it's easy to confuse them with eye strain (had your eyes tested?) and dehydration.

I dunno about you but when mine were really bad I turned into a walking analgesic dispensary - now, I've had 1,500mg of those, 1,000 of those...ah, I've only had 500 of those so I can have another couple... I get in such a state I'd take anything if there's a chance it can do something about the pain. Lord knows what my liver is like :( When you get a migraine your digestion shuts down, plenty of times I'd feel dehydrated, drink lots of water and then throw the whole lot up again. The pill for that is Motillium, which you can get from the vet's... sorry, chemist over the counter. They don't do that here so I have to import them. The alternative here is Torecan, that's for when things get real bad as you don't swallow them  I have pills for the migraines (Zomig) but it's always annoying when I throw the pill up again 5 minutes later, with the motillium I suddenly feel hungry and I know things are going to get better soon.

If you can get it, the herbal alternative is Winter Savory - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturea_Montana which you drink tea made out of dried leaves.

Incidentally, my mate the herbalist here has given me a treatment for your arthritis but I reads kind of worryingly...

idont take any painkillers because ive only got one kidney, (self inflicted)
and my liver aint good, due to drinking heavily from the age of 14 right up to 30, so
id rather suffer than live with the after affects of what doctors hand out, (they love human guinea pigs)

My migraines wasnt too bad until ihad a car crash about 4 year ago,
was apretty bad never been the same since, ijust plod on now, im lucky to still be here, so ican live with the migraines,

Hi Again, I got a mobile mech I know out to it this morning and he did a code read....it had 3 codes recorded.....

The 1st was 'PO606 ECU Defect'
The 2nd was PO100 Air Mass Sensor'
The 3rd was 'PO335 RPM Sensor'

His thoughts after further checking around was that he strongly suspected the ECU had a serious problem and that was the root cause but we cannot be sure yet!

Any thoughts please??

One thing at a time - if you can't hear the lift pump running and you always used to, sort that out first.

As the others said, test for 12V at the pump - if you don't have anything to do that with, try lifting the back seat and tapping the pump during the few seconds it usually runs when you turn the key on. If that works, you definitely need a new pump.

Hi everyone, thanks to all for helping with this.....heres where I'm at at the moment,
I took the ECU off because of the 'code reads' and took it to a place fairly local who test/repair ecu's...it came back and they said they decoded the immobiliser as this could be a problem with it being a 'non-starter'....however when I put it back on the car it still won't fire up......took it back to the ECU guys and they had another look.....they said it was fine apart from another stored code....'RPM SENSOR', they cleared it again and I took it home...tried again still won't start!!! But on the radio display screen it came up with 'ELECTRONIC IGNITION FAULT'.....just by chance could this be indicating that the 'crank sensor' is the problem??...I am a bit baffled...diesel car with electronic ignition fault???
Is it simply a 'blanket statement' that its telling me theres a fault with crank sensor/ cam sensor that is stopping the ignition system???

Help please guys!!

Not 100% sure mate but I think your electronic ignition fault is an immobiliser issue, is there a little key sign on the dashboard?
I had the same problem with my 406 where it just died all of a sudden and it was the lift pump in the tank ( well the first time it was). Do as someone else has mentioned by lifting the rear seat behind the drivers seat, there should be a circular black disc there. Put your ear to it and get someone to turn the ignition on, your should hear it pumping for about 3 - 5 seconds.
Not sure about how to sort ignition fault out, maybe they have altered something in the ecu? Have they definitely gave you the right ecu back?

Hi again,

Saga continues....the car started this morning and I couldnt see why all of a sudden. Anyway i took it for a run into town and parked up....came back to it and hey presto it wouldnt fire up and the ELECTRONIC IGNITION FAULT appeared again...so I got the AA out. A friendly patrol man turned up and asked a few questions and when I said the fuel pump had been groaning recently he took a hammer out and hit the fuel tank a few times.....and it started on the key without the ELECTRONIC IGNITION FAULT on the display...he said he used to work for PUG as a technician for years and saw loads of this problem....so I got home switched off...tried to start again and of course it wouldnt....hit the tank and the pump was heard groaning again and it fired up!!!
New fuel pump required!!

Cheers guys...thought I would let you know in case yours does the same.
