Insurance

Post by Sonia406 »

I put it to you: how does this make any sense...........

Insurance quotes via money supermarket and compare the market (MS were cheaper btw) with my 3 years no claims was just about £800, without my no claims (as they possibly expired) were £900 but still under 1k.
My last insurance company who said they could get my no claims back and she went off for 4 hours ''negotiating'' my no claims, were over 1k.
Fully comp was £1,200 and third party, fire and theft £1,100 but she assured me she could get my no claims back.

At this point, what was the point in ''saving'' my no claims if it was going to be dearer?

I rang them again today and said, listen I got cheaper quotes elsewhere. Said they couldn't match it, I asked for customer service.
I said to customer service do you hold the proof of my no claims? The reply came 'yes'
No negotiating, just an answer of yes. They are sending me proof of my no claims and I have got my insurance for under 1k.

I DO have 3 years no claims, had I constantly had a car and been constantly insured that would be 8 years no claims BUT small mercy where it's due, 3 years is better than nothing.

The first cheapest company on fully comp, with my no claims was ''sheilas wheels, model driver'' who wanted to play Big Brother with Miss Pug and me.
There's a tele-wotsit me-jig box they ''screw'' into the dash, which monitors your driving standards, you're braking distance and even the time of day you drive.
Should you speed, you apparently get fines from them (even if the police are not aware), should you be out past 9pm it can affect the policy prices.

I'm sorry, I don't do DRILLING HOLES IN MY DASH, nor this big brother bollocks, so made my way through the list.
Second cheapest (Motor quote direct) were incredibly helpful.

It turned out my previous insurance (last year) only had the car down as a 5 seater estate  so I asked MQD if it came up as a 7 seater on their database, yes was the answer. We then got into a bit of conversation, he said 'I am sure Peugeot were the first to bring in a 7 seater estate weren't they?' I said I didn't know but Volvo came close
Anyway, with that out the way I asked the question.
I couldn't remember the proper name: ''telematic box'' so I said 'Oh, do you install those telephone-wotsit, mejigs' his reply was 'Well I've never heard of those before, oh yes those - no we don't' I was like 'Ok, good I will go with you, no way is someone drilling holes in my dash'

So, in long and short, the car is finally insured. Costing an arm and leg but that's the joys of having a provisional license, a 2.0 engine and an estate car.

I am so extremely happy, it may seem like a very basic thing to you boys to be out on the road and to drive a car, but I assure you it is all I have ever dreamed about.

Next thing is to conquer the abs screw, fit new sensor and to get her through her MOT (in Swindon, if you see us on our way, blown your horn, raise your hand) and then to go to Oxford DVLA to tax her. (Or I could ring DVLA and see how much a replacement V5 costs, and how long it would take to come).

Either way, one very happy girlie right here

Documents emailed to me.

Why does it expire in a months time?
Is that because they need the proof of no claims etc?
Can I still tax it with this?

That's the cover note isn't it? the insurance should be 12 months.

Cameras getting you fined for speeding? fook that sheila can stick her wheels up her.....
I'm guessing they can also get you for driving on your own on a provisional too then?

I am not too sure they are actual cameras, more like a tracker
I don't think it records physical image data, more like location on the roads, position on the road, braking distance, speed - you know, all that stuff.

Sheilas wheels were not the only one doing this black box 'telematic' box thing. I rang another who also offered this same big brother thing, I just hope that all the insurance companies don't take to this black box scheme. I can perhaps understand it a little bit for those ''at risk'' but, come on, I'm just a girl, got kids, I'm knocking on 30's door  I'm a good girl

EDIT: Yes... you're right, cover note
Looked on my old cover note and that was only valid for two weeks

It's definitely not something I want on my car. Imagine getting a fine every time you accidentally nip over 30. f*ck that, I'd be skint! And I'm sure if you do it often enough, you become uninsurable.

They might not be tracking you, Big Brother style, all creepy-like, but they will use this data to get out of paying you money in the event of an accident, regardless of whose fault it is. Avoid like the plague.

Any plans to switch from your provisional to a full license any time soon?

Used to live in Gloucestershire, left there last March and in fairness my little girl had surgery in the Bristol Childrens hospital so I am no stranger to Bristol :)
One very very kind offer there thank you CP, most appreciated. :)

Exactly my thoughts!
Hopefully soon but theory ran out so have to re-do that as well. :(

That isn't what the operator at Shielas wheels told me............

P.s When I took out the insurance I am sure the operator said he was sending some thing in the post and I had to sent it back, ALONG WITH the proof of no claims discount.
Rang them yesterday to enquire where it was... E-Mailed it me, so asked them to send it me anyway.
Today it come, I see nothing where I need to sign...

Maybe I should read the whole document later (when time is on my side) and send the no claims anyway - I know they need this as a definite, but I thought I had something else to fill in and send back... clearly not.........

They usually just ask for NCB proof to be sent back to them - usually a renewal document from existing insurers or, in your case, your last insurance certificate. I never had to send anything signed, though.

Just sat down to read it, 3 signatures is what they wanted for the credit agreement. Never had that before. :)

Ahh, yeah, that would probably require a sig. I usually pay mine in one lump so maybe that's why I don't have much to send back.

Besides, I've only ever insured my current Pug with Admiral as they seem to be offering the best rates for me.

That's good! When they first came about with their two car policy we did get a quote with them, turned out we could get cheaper elsewhere than have a joint claim with them... Glad they're cheapest for you though :)

Insurance is a nightmare all round really..
Last year the price to insure both my wife 1997 306, and my 2004 406 was £550.
This year it was £825 !!!!!!.
When I used a price comparison site, the 2 cheapest quotes were with Admiral at a total cost of £525..????
I was straight on the phone to Admiral, asked for a call-back as I'm not paying to be on hold, and they asked me for the reference number on the comparison sites quote.
They then said they could honour that price and I accepted.
One phone call saved me £300, I did ask why the premium jumped so much and I felt they were picking on customers who may not bother shopping around and their reply was something to do with other drivers or some other bollocks...
No telemetry box for me.

If you can imagine a ball-bearing in a square biscuit tin on the passenger seat, the harder you accelerate, brake or turn the harder the ball-bearing hits the side of the tin. If you drive smoothly then the ball-bearing hits the tin gently. Every ball-bearing impact is recorded and this info is obtain by your Insurance company about how you drive your car, thus giving them the opportunity to needlessly whack up your insurance premium :supafrisk:

Sonia, when you have an MOT, just take your Insurance cover note with you to DVLA when you come to TAX Miss Pug. They will have record of her MOT, insurance and record of you being the car owner on file - no need to get a new V5.
