Correct way to store Tyres?

Post by Welly »

This might sound daft but I don't know the answer myself:

I've got my 4 Winter Tyres off and in the garage but how do I store them? upright? on their side walls? stacked? :?

I've got the tyre storage bags that they came in (just seem like white plaggy bags) and I've thoroughly cleaned and dried the tyres first.

Ultimately they will end up in the roof space of the garage where it's dark so they shouldn't 'age' due to UV light.

The Yoyo's winters are in similar bags, I really need to find something light-proof :frown:

Cheers for that, so 'dismounted' tyres are stored vertically - I was going to lay them on the sides

I'm supposed to 'turn' the tyres every 4 weeks :| good luck with that :|

I really ought to fashion a tyre 'cradle' from wood.............good luck with that too

What you could do is make a frame to hold them upright, with the tyres resting on 5 rollers. Fit each roller with sprockets and connect each one to an other and one end one to a motor via bicycle chains. Power the motor via a timer so it turns, say, half a turn a day. Problem solved (be easier to turn them by hand  )

Bejesus I might as well put them back on the car at this rate

It's right though; they could develop a splat fot if left unduly long in the same position :|

When I worked at a tyre wholesaler we used to stack them, so I can't see there being a problem in lying them on the side.

If you had enough of them, you could "lace" them, but I can't see anybody here having that many tyres lying around...

That won't work because the tyre will land on the same spot every other day, you need something that will turn them randomly so each and every mm of the tyre sees some ground over the next few months.... The tools for the job are very complicated and sometimes really hard to get them to work....Yes your hands... Use your f*cking hands ya lazy shyte.

That's what I wanted to do; stack them in two's on the sides - I thought that this way at least the tyre won't want to turn itself into an Egg-shape (which is what my Kuhmo's did whilst on the car  ).

At this rate I'll be seen popping up into the garage attic once a month to 'turn my tyres'..........her indoors will be very confused

If there just tyres with no rims,
Wrap them in shrink wrap/cling film/bin liners,

Not of the tyres, of the motor  Or maybe some sort of reduction gear so they're slowly turning all the time (one revolution every 8 weeks say). You could even use a gerbil for this.

What do you want from me, sanity? :(

The Pug's tyres are on rims and on a stand so they're all held horizontally, separately, supported in the middle of the rim and covered over with a big bag thing that's light-proof. The Toyotter's, on the other hand, are off the rims, vertical in a row and covered by the worthless tyre bags mentioned above, although before that they were in a big heap in the corner :|

Stacked, on their sides on a piece of wood or cardboard.

Don't store them standing up, they'll develop flat spots. The previous owner of my car did this and I had to throw out a perfectly good set of winter tyres because of really bad flat spots.

I think I will stack them on the sides in two's, seems a better way in my mind.

Oops! Were they on rims or off?

I think the Yoyo's winters are going to get kicked into a pile again :?
