Handbrake fixed,but caliper seized

Post by hammerman »

Got around to fitting my new rear handbrake cables yesterday. At last,i have a handbrake that works!!!!The handle comes up around 5 clicks & so far so good. The right hand side was easy, but the left hand side was seized solid in the hub,it took ages to remove.
But it would seem my rear l/h/side caliper has seized,as its not sliding and by the sounds of it there is rust under the rubber dust cover on the slider.I can get a recon caliper for £45,or a rebuild kit for £30.I`m tempted to get the caliper. But has any one rebluit a caliper??It seems straight forward enough in the hanyes manual.

Hi fella, like you I suffered from a seized caliper. I chose to buy a pair from eBay for £30 + postage and then just gave them a quick overhaul before swapping over.

Firstly get the sliders and pistons working on replacement calipers while they are off the car and maybe in a vice?

If you very gently, very very gently, peel back the rubbers from the sliders and the pistons and pack behind them with grease and put rubbers back, this may do the job.

I tried to fix my old calipers after fitting replacements but it was so seized it broke my vice.....

Ok,so basicly the top allen bolt is hit through thus splitting the caliper/sliders?Got to get the cam belt kit this week for it so will try freeing it off myself for now. Also have to fix my abs.The warning light had a mind of its own back in feb/march,then I heard a tell tell rattle from the front right wheel.Sure enough the toothed ring had snapped.I managed to repair it with some chemical metal which worked a treat.Untill I hit a pot hole tonight  But I have a brand new c.v joint for it as its the only one that I`ve not replaced.I also think that side is on its way out as since I hit the kerb the other week I have what sounds like a grumbly bearing noise from that side.It never rains but it pours

Thanks jasper, will try doing it at the weekend. If it comes apart ok then I reckon I will get a rebuild kit & repair it properly, instead of buying a new caliper. Will post the results at the weekend :)

Well that's my abs fixed. The ring had broken up on the right drive shaft,so I fitted my new cv joint I`ve had for a few years.I nice easy job, undo the hub nut, disconnect the bottom ball joint,a bit of a hammering to get the driveshaft out of the hub, then stripped the rubber boot & hammered the cv joint off the driveshaft.Refitted new cv joint & jobs a good un.Just need to sort the rear caliper tomorrow.

   It was fixed, not any more  I striped the rear caliper today & cleaned the sliders and added a bit of copper grease and all is well after bleeding.Although looking at the dust seals on the caliper I think I`d be better spending £15 more for a recon caliper as mine is very rusty.I don't think new rubber seals would seat.
Anyway, after doing a few trips locally the abs light has come on again.Although it comes on within seconds of starting the engine, the goes out when I start driving, but comes back on again within a mile or 2  I reckon it could be the front sensor as the toothed ring had split, and over the course of 2 days broke again leaving only half the ring spinning/flapping around on the cv joint.I try`d cleaning the end of the sensor & the light went off for a bit and came back on.
Any one local to Bristol have a code reader/pp2k??

I posted some cast iron, tried and tested many times advice that was not very well received shall we say, so I removed my posts and withdrew.

No problem, life goes on :D
