instrument panel fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

instrument panel fault

Post by jimmyfoo »

Hi, hoping someone can ease my panic lol......, have been trying to sort my dodgy speedo out for the MOT, focused on the clock pod as the car doesn't go into limp mode when the speedo stops......, tried re-soldering all the speedo joints but the speedo stiil cut out so tried swapping the internals of the rev counter and speedo as these appear to be the same and thought a dodgy rev counter is better than a dodgy speedo :) ......, unfortunately, (and this could be due to pushing the needles back on too far and making the gauge stick at first) i not only seem to have messed both gauges up as the rev counter says the engines ticking over at 1200 rpm but eml comes on after a few seconds at start up and when i stop the engine carries on running for 5/6 seconds after i've taken the key out ?!......., the car still drives fine despite the warning light...., does anyone have an idea what i've done ?...., is it all down to a dodgy clock pod ?, have tried returning everything to as it was but alas it's the same :(

D8 2.1 XUD TD lx

Speedo faults on these are usually the transponder unit above the glovebox (mine was). Dunno what you've done switching the clocks, hopefully you've just goosed them, not anything more serious :(

thanks steve......., have just been to pugparts in Rotherham, got a new clock pod, speedo still playing up though, lads in the garage have said its the speed sensor in the gearbox so got one of those to try, will look at the transponder if the problem carries on. More worrying is the eml and the engine running for a few secs when turned off ?!......., anyone got an clue on that one ? :), the eml go's out when you start but then comes back on after a couple of secs..., and when you turn the key off the engine carries on running a few secs accompanied by the battery light ? :(

My 406 has the exact same fault, and having changed the gearbox sensor with no joy, I am now on the lookout for a replacement set of clocks. The issue so far has been finding a set with mileage roughly the same as mine, with the two plugs at the back. The transponder is another avenue worth considering, and has anyone got a pic of what it looks like , and how to get at it ?

I did have my old one knocking about but it was completely sealed, no way of opening it up without a hammer so I binned it. However, it was a black box about the size of a fag packet, with a white multi-pin connector on one end. As above, it lives over the glovebox.

D9s don't have them, as far as I know.

New they're about 60 pounds. Ouch. The part is common to D8 406s with an ML5 gearbox (2.1td, 2.0 turbo & V6) as well as 605 V6 (not sure if that's old or new though) but no Citroens.
