Sonia,
Have you been shown / told that your reluctor rings have split / failed ? .
If money's tight at the mo & trust me I know what that feels like  .
Park pugster & put miss pug back to good use while you sort pugster at your time & conveiance.
+ miss pug will sell better with tax 'n' test when finished with her :supafrisk: .
ps the horn fix is a dead easy, follow earwig's guide / I'll post my pic's tomorrow.
Thank you, I haven't been shown or told (bar this thread) about the abs reluctor rings..
But that braking problem up front has literally - disappeared!

UPDATE:

It went to HiQ for a 'health check'
Dropped it off at 9am, picked up at 12 mid day. (Had that been Miss Pug I would NOT of left the site, this car? Dropped it off no problems, had a quick discussion as to what they would be checking (not a fooking lot tbh) and had no issues leaving it......)

Anyway, Health check came back with nothing new that I already knew to be honest...

2 front tyres (worn on inner side)
Recommend tracking

''Recommend front discs and pads, rear disks are scored, recommend replacing ((CROSSED OUT: when pads wear down)), handbrake needs adjusting and freeing off slightly seized. (Had to ask which side needs freezing. They say the drivers side, weird because all the wheel hub / handbrake noises are definitely my N/S!)

Everything else fine:
Exhaust condition (Well, it's only a month old right!)
Manifold stud conditions
Clamps, brackets, gaskets
Cat (visual check only)
Track rod ends
Gaitors (err, It's under the 'suspension and steering' section, by Gaitors do they mean CV boot wotsits? Surely they don't mean the steering rack gaitors?
Track control arm bushes
shock absorbers

Under brake section:
Fluid levels
pipes and hoses are all okay too

Under lubrication and cooling:
Engine oil level
Power steering fluid level
Hoses
Water level
washer bottle - all ok

Electrics
Lights / indicators
Wiper condition
Battery
Drive belts
Horn - are all okay.

SO - Have they REALLY looked at my drive belts, as I know for a fact the cam belt is due?
Have they really checked the horn or did they get lucky and press it in the right place for it to sound?

Rear calipers were not checked if they had seized and there was another thing that I wanted checked and that was not checked, probably the abs reluctor rings.......

Local APD have priced me up for disks and pads all around £111 including vat and a mobile mechanic is charging £50 in labour to not only fit them and bleed them but to adjust handbrake and free the handbrake cable too... Couldn't say no to that really could I?

Come on then boys, what do you make to this?

Brakes: it sounds like you've gone a long way towards just getting them done, so do it!
A metal-on-metal sound is probably rust on the back-plates catching on the discs -- quite normal! Ask your mobile mechanic to wire brush the back-plates (he'll probably do it anyway). We all know how tempremental the handbrakes can be.

MOT list:
Tyres (look for some eBay part-worns? What size are they? Or swap all 4 wheels with MissP (use Planet to tell it that it's got 15s on instead of 16s)).

Horn (See Steve's guide).

Steering rack gaitors.
Given that they're not on the HiQ list, does this mean that they're not an MOT failure?
If not a fail then they could be left.
Better to fix.
How much are the gaitors? How much extra to get them done at the same time as the brakes?

Other list:
Clutch
Cam belt (and water pump)

I think if possible I'd get the map put back to 136, and drive gently until I'd saved up.

Looks like gaitors are £16 each

They're right, right?
So how much to fit?

Steering rack gaitors are a definite mot fail!

Sonia, I mentioned yesterday that you might have a reluctor ring/ABS fault as I told you I had the same fault with the estate I bought from Dai.

I had a split abs ring on the front which allowed it to move out of alignment when I went round corners. I eased it open into a U shape to get it off, cleaned up the surface and araldited it back in place. It might not be the best solution but it is free, doable on your dive at home and hasn't given me an issue for the past 2.5 years

Sonia, you seem to have gone backwards! Get back out there and sort it yourself! (Pregnancy isn't an excuse  )

Steering rack gaitors are a peice of piss. Undo the track rod end from the hub. Remove the track rod end. Remove the two clips from the steering rack gaitor and slide of off.
Putting it all back together is the total opposite of removal! I can do it with my eyes shut these days.

If it's that quick then it shouldn't be much extra on the mobile mechanic who's doing the brakes.

Wheel swap sorts the tyres.

So come on! Let's not have an MOT fail on the horn!

Is that a plan?

Ive had the gauge stick on empty a few times, although that happens when i drive for a while on the orange light then put £20 in, the car doesn't register it and the cure usually is another £20 and reach in under the car and give the fuel tank a few bangs with my hand.

Pahaha.... Oh boys

Well I have no real update but to complain that on volume level 1 you can't hear sod all, volume level 0 should be silent but on volume level 1 you should be able to hear at least something?!

It's actually got to the point where me and the boyfriend are having arguments as to who has to drive it.... I am freely giving him the keys and he moans, hands them back and then I moan and say well if you're not driving, we're not going
Parked in front of a fenced off lake earlier, I said ohhhh - leave the handbrake off!

However I can report a few good things I have noticed:
The heater works.
Umm - forgot the other thing

CLUTCH
Dave was driving earlier, came to a stop and accidentally left it in third, tried to pull away and it stalled.
Is this a sign the clutch is in fact healthy?

Anyone advise if this is normal? ~
Engine off
Foot on brake pedal
Engine on
Foot still on brake pedal the pedal feels soft and goes down a bit?

Going to get myself some jump leads tomorrow and breath life back into Miss Pug, although she had a brand new battery in January it only takes a few days for it to go completely flat! So I am planning to swap the batteries over tomorrow to get some charge into this battery of Miss Pugs, I know Pugsters battery is a strong battery!
Any words of wisdom regarding Pugsters alarm system and stuff?

This is normal. Stupid, but normal.

Yep that's what should happen, it's the vacuum building up and the brake servo giving you some braking assist, making the pedal drop a bit.

What's up with the alarm?

With batteries, it sounds like Miss Pug's battery itself isn't the issue - is something drawing power when the car is not in use? If it's a new(ish) battery and going flat in a few days, I'd suspect something being on when it shouldn't be. Does it have an aftermarket head unit?

1) What a silly thing!

2) See I was thinking I had found the source of the air leak with that pedal going down, back to the drawing board with that one then...

3) Nothing up with the alarm, wanted to swap batteries to get some charge into the other battery etc.. wasn't too bad disconnecting Miss Pugs battery because she doesn't have an alarm, but I know this one has - and it works, - ha ha. Woo, another to add to the list of working things hey?
It does have an after market head unit but it was going flat long before I put that in....

Thanks Jon

What are the symptoms of the air leak? Are you getting vacuum system faults flagged in PP2000? These are extraordinarily common on the 2.2HDi engine, but also notoriously difficult to track down due the complex nature of the vac system on these engines.

When you're changing batteries, it's definitely best to follow the "BSI reset procedure" to properly shut down the electrical/electronic systems, then you're guaranteed that you won't have immobiliser/other electrical issues resulting from the BSI being powered off when it's not expecting it. Follow it until the "battery disconnect" step, then swap the batteries, then power both cars back up as the instructions say.
