DW10 to DW12

Post by dirtydirtydiesel »

AKA project BOOM!
Right,
I must have to much time on my hands, but due to being very hapy with my car I don't want to change it but!!!!
I'm after more poke  & lot's of it
So I'm thinking about buying a 2.2 complete car & doing a full stripdown & overhaul on the engine.
But the thing is how much work & how doable is it to retro fit into my car, I'm locking for 225 bhp+ with 300+ltbs torque & a six on the floor like Doggy :supafrisk:
Don't mind the work & the cost but would it work  Cheers DDD.

Can't help but think you'd be better off buying a good 2.2 and nurturing it. Swapping all the bits is obviously possible, but have you thought it through?
Apart from the obvious engine c/w dmf, clutch, thrust brg, slave cyl, dpf housing, centre exhaust, I suspect you're going to need the engine ecu, BSI, lock set, keys, transponder, engine bay wiring loom, complete vacuum system, the list just goes on.....
If you want to avoid the risk of future MOT problems, you might even have to fit an additive tank you'll never use - imagine PAYING to do that!
I can't see you being able to do it without having both cars and lots of time, not to mention locating a good 20MB04 'box.
Then to get that amount of power, you'll need at least uprated fuel pressure and MAP sensors, plus about £400 for the remap......

In summary:
2.2 donor car £?
engine rebuild £ 400?
gearbox £ 200?
clutch + dmf £ 350
uprated sensors £ 250
egr delete / air doser removal £ 75
remap £ 400
plus something for service items, fluids, probably an engine mounting or two, a drop link, exhaust clamp - most of these tend to happen if you remove / replace the gearbox.

Budget for £2.5k and a year of your life.

A good 2.2 would allow you to sell your car and knock the first two items off the list above. You may want to do the conversion, but your accountant will think you're certifiable.

+1 on what doggy said, and don't forget 2.2's will probably have more toys as standard if you can find ne in nice condition.
Tax and insurance is cheaper on mine than my old 1.9 as well so I can't really see why you'd do it except for the experience of it all.

Guy's in the sober light of day I probably have to agree with you both  ,
Thing is I was offered a 2.2 2002 saloon with the anti-polution light on & a list of mot fails showing 121k for £350 :supafrisk: .
Now I was gonna pull the lump & give it a good going over at my lesuire & then pull all the parts needed from the donor car when the swap was done
But I have to admit it sounds like a lot of work for no real gains.
Guess I'll stick with what I've got for now as the trouble 'n' strife 'll kill me if she knows what I'm thinking about

Are the MoT fails tricky or expensive?
Is the car in tidy condition?

The reason I ask is the anti-polution fault is a fairly easy fix, having sorted my own 2.2 with my very limited knowledge it can't be too tricky can it :D
It could well be something as simple as a split vac pipe and many of the potential culprits can simply be removed which equates to zero cost.

You'll never get near the 2 litre for economy but it is possible to get high 30's around town if you drive sensibly, I managed a touch over 38 in a 2 week period of pure town driving with my sensible head on even with short 5 minute journeys(usually can't be arsed and average 33/34 round town tho). The tax is higher and you'll probably pay more on insurance to boot.

Would I swap mine for a 2 litre?.....God no!

Not realy mate!
It's been run into the ground,
ABS light on & all four disc's look ropey,handbrakes no good,susy's knockin,all four tyres shot,anti-polution lights on,cambelts overdue,aircons not working,com2000 wobbly,exhaust blowning,dents & scratches all over :( ,& it's a saloon & only do estate car's  .
Other than that it's a good buy .
Did think about it as a doer uper & then move it on but T.B.H after the cash to do it up I'd just about brake even & that's not including my time :frown:

Nowt realy wrong with a 2 litre, less to go wrong / cheeper to fix, between 140 & 160 bhp re-maped, £140 a year road tax & I regularly get 51mpg up to 55 on a run.
Happy days :cheesy: (B.I.W. realy like one like I said in my o.p :supafrisk: )
