Decent Breakdown cover - how much?

Post by Welly »

Sorting our BD cover for the MIL this week, they've* been with the AA for years and years and this years renewal cost is £205.00

I got them down to £150.00 but then looked around at other companies.

Green Flag appear to do the same cover for £60.00 with an online discount as a new customer, I'm going to have a battle getting her to agree to change companies because: AA and that's what they do etc. but what do you all pay?

Basically need: Home Start, UK Relay Recovery and Roadside assistance.

Might it be worth looking at one of the deals where its included with a bank account that admittedly you have to pay for?
Lloyds platinum costs the same as their AA renewal, (£17/month), but includes mobile phone insurance and worldwide travel cover.
Nationwide FlexPlus has UK/European breakdown & recovery with homestart for £9.95/month and pays 3% interest
There may be better options....
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I'm with the 'RaC.
Always got it fairly cheap 'ish.
Just waiting on 'renewal..and see how much it goes down since getting my
BlueBadge thing.

Apparently..if the owner or anyone else who travels in the car is disabled..
You get really cheap breakdown cover.. Not sure how that works .?
,,..............

Wasn't the insurer on the forum offering good deals on breakdown cover?
Might be worth a look.

I've been with the AA since 1958, as a result I get a few free perks like Home start but its still expensive, I have had good value from them though, I have had them out twice in the last year, once when I parked in Cornwall and left my lights on and again when I couldn't start after the car got damp inside - he couldn't help me though.

I keep meaning to try and get a discount but it creeps up on me and I leave it to late.

We were with the RAC until I had to call them on an August Saturday when I was stuck on the A34 with a leaky top hose. My wife has a blue badge and we had 'priority response' because of this. They told me a minimum of 6 hours before they could get to us, so I told them to stuff it, bodged the hose & limped 70 miles home in 3 hours. Cancelled the membership the following day.

I must admit the AA service has been very good to us, usually less than an hour sometimes a lot quicker, when my 'new' C5 broke down on the M5 they were out in about 10 minutes - still expensive though.

I've been with the AA for 21 years, this year I threatened to leave so I got a loyalty-type discount but there was still a small increase. It saddens me how these previously respected organisations now do the whole "go online for the best deals" thing and offer only new customers the best deals, what about your loyal existing customers?

Sure I've got the 'Gold' membership well whoopie I've never even bothered to look at how that helps* I know there's some kind of key insurance but that's not a gift is it, I PAY for it. I don't know about anyone else but I've never lost a key in my whole life it's one of those things we key an eye on when we're out and about.

So anyway next year (or even now if the penalty for leaving isn't too much) the AA can jam it, such a shame but I won't be treated like a idiot any longer and someone else can have my money.

In 21 years with the AA I've used them three times:

Honda - distributor failed leading to spectacular CAT melting episode on the A1 late at night

406 - fuel lift pump failure

406 - broken spring

That's it just three things in 21 years.

And we're swapping the MIL over to Green Flag today, she's been with the AA for a long time too.

I will be interested in how much you can save. I must admit I have had good value for money from the AA, I have probably had them out on average once a year, especially when I started running XMs, I did used to cover very high mileages in my working life, mostly in old cars.

I'm signed in to the various emails from the moneysaver sites. Think it may be moneysupermarket that did an article
while back that said that if you negotiate on breakdown cover renewals, you can obtain significant reductions.

I've got breakdown cover this year for the first time in my life, freebie basic cover off the back of my Saga car insurance.
Last month, the car wouldn't restart, in Morrison's car park. Called Saga, and an AA man was there in half an hour.
Well pleased with that.

I'm using RescueMyCar for £19.

I had both breakdown and insurance with the AA who were very keen for the new business but turned out to be complete arseoles once I was an existing customer. I can manage without people like that.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
