Engine cuts out as iam moving then restarts

Post by higgsy »

As im driving along my engine gauge keeps moving from zero to 90 then suddenly the engine warning light will come on and my engine will cut out then a few seconds later it will restart. On a 100 mile journey on motorway and open raod it will happen at least 2 times.

 Um......

Fuel injector problems perhaps?
If it's a D8 I'd suggest stepper motor issues too.

Can you please say what you mean by engine gauge? The Rev counter or Speedo?
IF Rev counter... surely 90 (IE 9000 RPM) is WELL into the "gonna blow up" range of the engine for a Diesel?!?!

OK... so the Engine temp shoots to 90 and the engine cuts out, in sync with that?
Or do you mean the needle is dancing between zero and 90?

A 2001 engine makes it a D9 engine. I presume the little HDI info under your username is correct? So its a 2001 HDI engine.

Hmmm

We have a resident mechanical genious who should hopefully be able to suggest something. But I'd say you might be experiencing some sort of electrical issue. (Not all uncommon on 406s!) the engine temp at 90 is about right for normal operating temp, give or take 10 degrees, so I wouldn't say the engine is cutting out due to the temperature. And even if it was the temp, I'd expect the ECU to switch to "limp home mode" first.

Does the engine cut out at a certain speed? You sure the engine is cutting out and its not just ur steering and braking have gone?
If its just ur steering and braking have the Crankshaft Pulley looked at, as it might be on its way out and the belt is slipping at a certain speed.
