Diagnostic report for the bewildered...

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Diagnostic report for the bewildered...

Post by jlmacd »

Had the diagnostic checks done this morning on the 2.0 HDi 110 Automatic recently purchased and a few faults showed, mostly intermittent. There was a massive collection of faults showing initially as I guess it had never had the fault history cleared. After doing so, it recorded the following :

BSI- 2 faults
[intermittent] [84C4] Battery charge
[intermittent] [8492] No communication with multifunction display (have fixed this today though)
Engine - 3 faults
[permanent] [0571] brake switch signal: Communications fault (don't understand this one - I know the brake light all function but suspect it isn't referring to that)
[intermittent] [1537] Accelerator pedal jammed (V84->): Strategy active (don't understand this one either.... :!: )
[intermittent] [1112] Fuel high pressure monitoring: Lack of pressure (leak) (this one has me worried - should i be? How do you remedy this??)

Gearbox

6 fault(s)

[intermittent] [0002] clutch slip - not characterised
[intermittent] [0006] Pressure regulation - Variation / RECOMMENDATION -not characterised
[intermittent] [0026] Throttle Potentiometer - not characterised
[intermittent] [0032] automatic gearbox communication fault with the engine management - not characterised
[intermittent] [0063] Multifunction switch signal fault - intermediate position - not characterised
[intermittent] [0091] Gearbox input speed signal - no signal

Chap who ran the test said, overall, things looked reasonably healthy. I am, optimistically, wishing to believe him but, to be honest, am unable to interpret the meaning of most of these faults, especially the gearbox ones.

Are there any diagnostic gurus out there who can translate the above findings into layman's terms and help put my mind at rest a little? Would really appreciate any feedback.

Many thanks.

Peugeot Diagnostic Reports be like:

Image

Most of us have found all kinds of spurious error logs in 406 ECU's and most would say to clear them away, drive, monitor, and re-check. THEN begin to deal with the most frequently logged errors.

Fuel pressure logs can be associated with running out of fuel and the 'accelerator jammed' might be why your pedal was slack; it probably did 'jam' somehow and was loosened off haphazardly.

Auto Gearbox 'errors' might be wheel slippage in the snow or the engine has been switched off whilst still moving or it was accidentally knocked out of gear whilst moving etc. there's a million events which can flag errors but it's just about cutting through all the rubbish and finding the 'real' ones.

Our Citroen "automatic" had an error log about a Communication Error between vehicle speed and the gearbox....turned out it had been knocking into Neutral at 70mph

Thanks Welly - appreciate the feedback and everything you say about the vagaries of faults appearing. The original gamut of fault codes were cleared out and the ones shown are what showed up afterward. But this was just a static, engine running test. I have now driven her some since yesterday so, maybe I should bite the bullet and plug in and take another look.
I bought Diagbox/PP2000 last year as a final, last resort, attempt to try remedy the age-old (non-functioning) key remote programming on my old car. Am very much the novice at the moment but, perhaps this is the time to get to grips with it and put it to proper use? I appreciate it is a very steep learning curve though.

Mostly intermittent. They could be things that happened only once months ago. Clear them all and see what -- if anything -- comes back.

Remember to change the oil in the autobox. Peugeot say the auto is sealed for life and this is a vicious lie.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

That's encouraging to hear you endorse that. Never having had an auto before, I did a bit of research before buying and it said it was recommended to do so. Chap I bought her from said similar. There was quite a collection of service receipts showing it had been looked after well (regular servicing and cambelt/water pump done etc) but no record of a transmission fluid change. Mileage now at 65k so reckon it wouldn't do any harm.
What's the recommended interval for this, I wonder and is it easy enough to do, or should it be left to a garage?
Just got the Haynes for the car - hopefully, procedure may be in there?

Search for "AL4".
The Australians seem to be the experts on it.

Draining and re-filling seems to be failrly straightforward. It's crucial to use the correct fluid which is Esso LT 71141.

As I understand it there there is a software updated that increases the actuation frequency of the control solenoids on the valve block, and this must be accompanied by replacement of the solenoids with uprated ones.

That is what I want - and intend - to do! Just as soon as I can get the information I need to do so.

So far, I read there are two types of autobox: the AL4 or the 4HP20. I am fairly certain mine would be the AL4 as I read that is what is fitted to the HDI 110. (can anyone confirm this for me?)
Which models would have had the other box, the 4HP20, then?

Thanks rwb. Am I correct then in the assumption that my 2.0 HDI 110 will have the AL4 autobox?

Thanks also for the link to yt vid. Will take a thorough look at the vid tomorrow.

Oil change DONE ! (Mobil LT71141)
Drives well, no reoccurrence of dropping into 'emergency mode' i.e. stuck in 3rd gear. Not yet anyway! From what I have read it sounds like there is a design fault with the AL4 box which may or, hopefully, may not involve stripping down and upgrading two of the control valves to the Borg Warner versions.
TBH, if it comes to that I will most likely just s***-can the whole thing and move on. It's not worth the effort nor expense.....
