Hi all - just completed my 1st 1000 miles in new 3.0 v6 1999 estate - 500 or so pulling a caravan. performance is stunning - my last car was a v6 audi but this is better. Anyway my heart was in my mouth the other day when the oil temp guage went right up when putting ign ition on after a run - it went right to end of guage, then back to normal - i assume this is normal? Also, especially when pulling the caravan the watewr and oil temp do go quite high - avove 90, then go lower presumably when the fan comes on. Is this normal?
I will do oil change and filters at weekend - ant ideas on oil and filters to use?
as you are towing the temps will get very high, i would recommend a genuine purflux oil filter and 0W40 fully synthetic oil, either mobil 1 or castrol edge as these both work very well at extrmeley high temps, you could also try castrol (not sure of the name) 10W60, its designed to work at even higher temperatures
the reason your oil temp gauge shoots up when you turn the ignition on is becuase its showing you the oil level, but its very innacurate and you shouldnt trust it,
if you intend to use the car for towing all the time i would recommend a hot climate thermostat and a slighty more watery coolant mix i.e. 30% antifreeze
