Trying to get my remote fob/plip locking working!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Trying to get my remote fob/plip locking working!

Post by sidmon1 »

Have got a two button plip (RF type I believe) remote/fob on my '96 406 that doesn't work and hasn''t as long as I've had the car though the fob needed new batteries. I only have the one (primary) fob and purchased some new batteries for it in the hope of getting it working. Replaced the batteries and followed the procedure for re-programming the remote (pressing big button three times while key is in the swtiched on ignition) and still not working. Where do I go from here in regard to repairing it/getting it working again. I know of a 406 that has working remotes and its the same year as mine.....would I be able to swap the remote fob system over?

Hmmm. It can't be the original key or the transponder has gone faulty in the car; you can't reprogram a second hand key to the car but there is a thread on the transponder which is fairly recent. A new key is about £120

So it's obviously a key or receiver fault. How do I get to the receiver just to make sure it is seated correctly? Also I didn't think the immobiliser keypad type early 406 had transponder keys.

Just to confirm then, I cannot take the receiver and fobs from a working '96 D8 and fit them in my car without main dealer programming?

Doesn't look like it. I can't see why it wouldn't work, it's not like it's got a BSI to appease or anything.

Can anyone else see why a Immobilser Keypad type 1996 406 RF Receiver and Fob that works wouldn't be able to be transplanted into a same year 406 with non-working remote locking without needing to be reprogrammed by the main dealer?

yes, you need the C/L ecu from behind the glovebox and matching keys

When you mean matching keys, do you mean matching fob bodies?

if you open up the key there will be a tiny sticker inside with a number, the one that starts P (primary) should have a corresponding number on the C/L ecu

So I only need the fob part of the key, not the blade as well (i.e. I can replace just the fob part on my key). How do I remove the glovebox to get to the central locking ECU, and how do I remove the ECU itself?
