I'm pondering getting a license and a little 125 for going to work in the summer. probably save me a fortune in petrol...

I'm just thinking about how much cheaper it might be to get to work...

10 miles a day at 21mpg = 43 litres per 20 days
at 80mpg = 11 litres

£30/month saving for 6 dry months = £180/yr saving

Think that's killed that idea! I was expecting the saving to be a lot more than that... and 80mpg seems ridiculously low. I thought bikes got waaay over 100mpg anyhow? What's the point of them if they don't?

That would rather depend on the bike and how you ride it! You can get things that do over 100mph but you might want to wear a disguise while you're riding it and park it round the corner from work...

10 miles a day? Call that a commute??!! Hey, for the price of a tank of petrol you could pick yourself up a human-powered two wheeled commuting vehicle :P (you'd probably get there faster too!)

I have one of those, but it's not exactly flat around here. 1/4 of the trip is too steep to ride up, and sitting in an office dripping with sweat ain't exactly my idea of fun... It ends up being around 10 mins by car, 40 by pushbike or 60 walking

I'm on about small bikes, not crotch rockets. The only advantages I can see for someone with a driving license are 1) traffic avoidance (not needed round here) and 2) fuel economy

There's no way I'm ever getting on a crotch rocket because I know I'd head up to the Peak District on it and kill myself...

I know that one, it's about the same distance between my house and my other half's but that's all up and down (mostly up going home). I tried it once but I was almost dead by the time I got there. Still, imagine how fit you could be! :cheesy:

I get it doesn't make much sense for you, by the time you've paid for it and insured it any savings you'd make would be long gone. That doesn't mean it makes no sense to everyone else!

You don't have to buy a Blackbird or an RF 900 (lovely bike btw), there are more, umm, sane bikes about. I have an antique tdm 850 which is more like an express comfy chair :cheesy: Fast bikes scare me too, I always worry that an injudicious twist of the wrist would have me in a whole world of trouble.

Get a CB500 or similar Matt, costs me £19 for 210 miles and it's still pokey enough to throw around if you want to without scaring the sh1t out of yourself.

ZZR1400 though  *drools*
