I know that one, it's about the same distance between my house and my other half's but that's all up and down (mostly up going home). I tried it once but I was almost dead by the time I got there. Still, imagine how fit you could be!
The only advantages I can see for someone with a driving license are 1) traffic avoidance (not needed round here) and 2) fuel economy
I get it doesn't make much sense for you, by the time you've paid for it and insured it any savings you'd make would be long gone. That doesn't mean it makes no sense to everyone else!
There's no way I'm ever getting on a crotch rocket because I know I'd head up to the Peak District on it and kill myself...
You don't have to buy a Blackbird or an RF 900 (lovely bike btw), there are more, umm, sane bikes about. I have an antique tdm 850 which is more like an express comfy chair

Fast bikes scare me too, I always worry that an injudicious twist of the wrist would have me in a whole world of trouble.
