Now what?

Post by steve_earwig »

Hi guys, hope you're having good ones. Sorry I've not got much nice to say just now but I think I might have a problem looming: All the time I've had the D8 I've never heard the turbo, i know its there 'cos I can feel what it does, but it's always been drowned out by the clatter of the engine. I can hear the HDi's, it's just lurking in the background there, nothing serious like echoing off of buildings etc. but it's there. Anyway, this evening we've been to town to see my in-laws and suddenly I can hear the turbo, maybe a tad louder than the HDi's. When I got back I parked it up, opened the bonnet and gave it a rev - loud whistling coming from under the car.

Seized egr? Imminent turbine self-destruction? Hole in the exhaust? Hole in air hose? Just my imagination runnin' away with me?? Farked if I know!

It was pitch dark both ways so I can't say I saw any smoke, engine temp normal, still pulls like a train, which makes me think about how I span the wheels twice without even trying (not allowed to floor it with the mrs on board anyway   ) [completely ignorant of diesels]but I'm not even sure how the TD controls the boost pressure so I don't know if that's relevant.[/completely ignorant of diesels].

I suppose I'd better get it up in the air tomorrow and have a look-see (oh no, not again). I thought I'd better post on here first, in case I don't make it back alive... :cheesy:

Bleedin' obvious innit - exhaust's gone: right where the downpipe meets the cat it's cracked almost all the way around. It never rains but it pours buckets of bluddy monkey diarrhea on my head :(

Hello Steve
To get an idea if it is the Turbo whistling put your hand around the hose from the intercooler to the manifold, lift the engine revs and listen carefully to note if the whistle follows the expansion of the hose. Other things may change note exactly with the rise in RMP but turbo has a slight delay in spooling up - you are trying to match that delay. If it is the Turbo then a couple of things need to be checked. Is there a hose cracked (of course if there is a hose broken the expansion of the former mentioned hose may be affected.) It may be that air is escaping enough to cause the whistle but not enough to affect the performance, and check the intercooler for same. May explain the sudden occurrence rather than a gradual one. Next you need to check the small line filter in the supply to the Turbo - this often gets missed by low grade poorly trained fitters - not all models are fitted with these but if they are it can spell disaster if it gets blocked - my HDI 110 has one. Another check - but more complex for some is to disable the Turbo by applying a vacuum to the wastegate to take the weight of the exhaust rotor, (to repeat some of my earlier notes:Turbos don't "kick in" they are running all the time and vary with engine speed and are bypassed with the Wastegate) if this stops the whistle after all the other checks have been confirmed then it may be that one of the vanes on either the exhaust or the compressor rotor has broken - a more serious fault and if it is you are lucky it has not completely destroyed the turbo. I have only once come across this but it does happen. Bearings usually gradually get noisy so this is low on the list just now. If you get a result let me know. OK you beat me to it.

It's ok, I cracked it (literally :( ), interesting post though so don't delete it or owt.

I'm surprised I didn't notice the exhaust blowing last night but then I suppose it's been getting worse without me noticing. Then I didn't lay on the ground next to it last night (we have 3 dogs...) nor get my other half to rev it like I did this moring.

If only.

£2500 in vets bills just plunged my into massive debt and skintness, a 406 that won't warm start with steering so bad I'm scared to drive it in case a coil spring brakes, a cold house with a flooded kitchen the landlord can't be arsed fixing, and 6 weeks until the next payday

Hold on, fixing your puddy-tat cost 2.5k? I'll have to tell my vet here it's time to emigrate! I'm really attatched to all four of mine but there's no way I'd spend that much on them, even Lord Ming.

Try getting a clamp round this lot:

Hold on, if it breaks all the way won't the whole exhaust fall out...

I was trying to put some exhaust paste round it but then I realised the whole lot's flexing, I may as well try putting a band aid on it. I'll try my friendly garage tomorrow morning (I already emailed them) and see what they suggest. I could try migging it I suppose, then I should really take the section off to avoid frying the ecu but I've no idea how siezed the clamps are. Plus the metal's quite thin so I'll probably just blast big holes in it.

Oh bloody 'ell Steve :(
I've got a blow on mine somewhere, I haven't investigated it yet. I need to have a look because I was down in Winchester today and the exhaust was grounding out going up every slope in the multi-story carpark :frown:

Steve, I may have a cheap fix for you....I look after a fleet of Peugeot Expert vans, this is a common fault on those, sometimes, to get them back to the company's warehouse, I fit a joining piece. These joining pieces are what are fitted to VW cars when you fit a new exhaust, it's a proper fix. It comes as a tube with clamp bolts on each end, the tube has slides built in that fold in as you tighten the clamp bolts, you can buy different sizes to suit.

In your case, you would have to grind off the fins that stick out on the side of the cat to make the repair tube fit.
