Stone dead temp display
I recently had the speedo cluster out soldering the pins on the speedo and rev counter and since putting it in again my outside temp sensor has been stone dead.
Does anyone know if it has a multiplug down near the speedo wiring that I've been hauling on?
I can't be arsed taking the speedo out again to look!
If it goes straight into the loom I can't figure out why it's dead.

Re: Stone dead temp display
Do you mean the backlight in the temp display has gone?

Nope, it's stone dead.
Even with the back light bulb out you can still make out the display (just).

Yank the thing out and see if it's still connected?

Re: Stone dead temp display
It's still connected at the display end.
I'm wondering if it goes to another multiplug elsewhere or whether it wires straight into the loom?
I'm using the other gauge at the moment (if the windscreen is icy it's cold).

Not sure what you mean there. Can you see the display functioning with the bulb removed? I've had to replace the bulbs before.stevenlizuk wrote:Nope, it's stone dead.

It's quite a simple wiring setup on the D8, have a look in Haynes for the wiring diagram (which is correct in this case!!) and check you've got 12v going into the trip computer. I'm sure it takes its feed from the instrument cluster loom.

Yes even with the backlight bulb removed you can still make out the figures on the display very faintly.
It's just a "negative" of a digital watch type display and the backlight shines through the unlit portions of the display.

Re: Stone dead temp display
Forgive me for stating the obvious, have you tried new bulbs?
If you have, stick a meter across the bulb contacts on the pcb and see if you've got 12v. The tracks may even have worn away; you could build them up again by re-tinning them.

Re: Stone dead temp display
So... the unit which display outside temp... is that all it does? Or is it a MFD?
I'm considering putting one in during my Grand Pimping™ project... then again the little nook in there now does make for a very handy mobile holder

As it happens I've got a spare trip computer Tomswiss wrote:So... the unit which display outside temp... is that all it does? Or is it a MFD?

Erm... Yes it is a MFD after a little fettling but unfortuantely it's only of any use on the petrol engines with bosch fuel injection. You can get some of the functions to work but you'll be missing the live fuel data which renders it a bit pointless

Re: Stone dead temp display
You can also get a dedicated temperature display unit to plug in the hole which, uh, displays the temperature in bigger numbers
