Cooling fans on from cold.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Cooling fans on from cold.

Post by wasp »

HI
I have a 2002 rapier hdi 90 which when i turn the ignition on the cooling fan/s? on radiator fire up full blast, this continues after engine starts and only goes off when ignition turned off.Any ideas? i have cleaned the relay connectors under rectangle box on rads but no better.another strange thing ive noticed is that when engine stops i can hear a noise abit like an electric motor coming from the rear of engine (turbo area) which fades out after about a minute? i dunno if this could be related or normal. my other 110 hdi doesnt make this noise.
thx in advance

You could have a look at this thread, maybe the fan controls have crapped out? ...viewtopic.php?t=1452&start=0#p13555

Or it could be a coolant sensor?

MAybe this is what killed the last BSi/ECU? :?

I'll go with coolant temperature sensor too.

Thx guys ill try another coolant temp sensor.
I forgot to mention that a friend plugged his diag thingy in and one fault code found it was p0483 " Cooling Fan Rationality Check Malfunction "
just thinking on about temp sensor,,the gauge on dash read correctly does this mean sensor is behaving?
pfff...i never had these electrical problem with my austin allegro yrs ago

Means the ECU's getting silly readings from the sensor

Nope, the dashboard's fed from its own temp sensor (presumably so if the ECU doesn't pick up on a fault, the driver might)

You want to make sure you replace the correct sensor, unfortunately I haven't got a clue which is which (or where either are located) on your car sorry

This would be the Bitron sensor? Haynes says on the thermostat housing on D9s (was on the oil filter housing on D8 diesels)

The easy way to tell them apart is to unplug the connector on one and see if the dash stops showing the temperature

ok thank you all ,
i cant find a 2nd sensor , removed and replace the sensor on thermostat housing with a new one still no joy.resistors x2 behind rad cowling are ok, ive just swapped them with my other 406.two green relays when removed do nothing...fan still runs, but removing the smaller blue relay stops the fan.
are the 3 green relays tucked just inside the inner wing in a black box (nearside) related to fan?
removing wire to temp sensor gets message "engine to hot" and stop light on..doh cant remember if fan ran then or not..think it did.
any further help would be appreciated.
me & electrics.... maybe i should buy a fire extingisher...

i think i have found the fan problem.checked out the rpo no.s on on the doner car and my car, the donor car is slightly newer and has the self combusting later fan without relays in the front! prob explaining the fault code p0483 "cooling fan Rationality Check Malfunction"
im now trying to find out if the engine ecu controls the fan and not the bsi, if so i will have to go back to peugeot ,refit the original engine ecu (which was without fault) and have it sync'd to the new bsi?
unless anyone knows of a workaround!

The BSI controls non-essential stuff that's controlled from inside. The fans are controlled by the main ECU or bitron ECU
