Hello there

Post by DiscoPol »

well this is just a quick post to say hello and introduce myself and my motor to you all.

I bought my 2000 plate 406 90 HDI GTX estate about 2 weeks ago, the reason being i needed something cheap to run, fairly simple to work on and a bit more family friendly than my last motor, so I have gone from a '99 BMW 740 E38 (the love of my life, but dont tell the wife) to a big silver rattling bus, mind you got to say im loving the MPG, Ive gone from about 17-18 round town to nearly 50 mpg now so thats putting the smile on my face a bit, doesnt make up for the fact the the 7 is sat on the drive looking all sad, everytime i walk past to get in the pug i feel like im cheating on her

But as time goes by and the huge amount of cash im, saving with the 406 on fuel she will back and can then truly achieve the status of TOY. :cheesy:

the 406 does have a few gremlins to sort and of course the standard bottom engine mount to sort along with a dubious amount of history so i spose the timing belt should be done, but my new friends that is where you lot come in, i will apologies now for the future, you may get sick of me asking the most obvious questions about the 406. (I really wanted to hate the sensible family car, but i kinds like it :? :? )

Welcome along.

I jumped in the same boat a month and a bit ago from a 260hp Volvo 850 T5 doing 18-19mpg around town and now im in 406 HDi 90 Saloon doing 35mpg.

They are comfy cars and tbh, its my first french car and im fairly impressed with it despite the lack of performance but I can live with getting double the MPGs

S'funny cos I feel I already know you?

I never did work out whether the savings in mpg's on my HDi actually paid off once I factored in the *Mahoosive* repair bills I suffered

I wonder if the Red-Dream is still going ok? :supafrisk:

You know, with a little hindsight, I maybe should have bought the car from you with it being fully serviced. Just the high-ish miles that put me off :( And I already put on 22k since buying my current one, so yours would be close to 150k in my hands now!

Hi there Dan! Welcome to the sensible club :cheesy:

I wouldn't worry about it, you know how good the car was when you sold it, if it's gone bang since it could be down to pilot error...

It's a bit like my dad and his old house, he keeps moaning about how much of the work he did to it has been undone by the new owner. Yes dad, but that work was to make the house how you wanted it and helped sell it. it's not yours now so who cares what the new owner does. Even if it involves a bulldozer...

So this is the sensible club then?? well if this is sensible then i must be grown up now  , damn thats :( , hey ho.

I have been a member of a few forums before, mainly for the BMW and always found them to be a great way of saving cash on garage bills, and in the 7 series that always helped at the pump :D

It looks like i will have to find another way of wasting my cash now, what with the 406 currently running at a combined consumption of 48.4mpg compared to the combined of 22mpg on the 7 it makes a new to me leather interior look very very attractive :) there are some things i miss from the 7 apart from the obvious power and speed and leather is pretty high on the agenda, anybody know what the score on retro-fitting cruise control would be like??

Thanks for the welcomes guys, and heres hoping i can keep the silver bus running with your help.

For the cruise you'd need the actuator, pipes, ecu, switches, a trip to the dealers to enable the system...

Ebay, aftermarket job.

Diesels don't have actuators & plumbing - the ecu just alters the injection duration to maintain speed, but you do need all the rest and some help from the dealer's techie. A few others have done it, try a search on here.

just been out and fired up the BMW, god i miss that car already, so im thinking i will hold off and just wait till i get her back on the road, it all looks a little bit too much like an arse of a job and it just wont feel the same in the HDI. Thanks for the input though guys,

I have to say this is one of the most friendly and quick responding set of guys i have had the pleasure of joining online, Thanks again.

This doesnt mean the pug will be getting ignored it just means im only going to do whats necessary to keep her going, honest

now anybody got a leather interior they wanna flog me?  thats just general maintenance surely??
i mean i will tell the wife its so we can wipe up easier after the little un obviously.
