adding rear electric windows

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

adding rear electric windows

Post by Col »

I have a question about adding rear electric windows to my car, as the ones on my D8 are currently manual...

basically - what do I need (apart from motors obviously) ?

is the wiring already in place or will I need to source a suitable loom ?

is this going to be too much hassle :(

having slept on this, I don't think I could be bothered

I'll just have to get hold of some D9 leather door cards from a car that had manual rear winders fitted

The wiring may or may not be there (have a look). Obviously you'll need the switches for the driver's door as well as the rears. YOu could always cut holes in the rear doors for the winders...

I'd actually be surprised if the body harness didn't already have the wiring for this, and IF it does it could be a dead easy job if you're willing and able to just swap the doors for ones with the mechanism and wiring already in place. As Steve says, you'd have to get the drivers door switches installed, which may be more difficult as I'm less confident of the wiring being in place in the door.

So yeah, could just be a case of swapping 3 doors, or 2 doors and getting a new switch panel... but it could be an arse of a job if the body wiring's not in place

electric windows are controlled by the BSI ECU, so you would probably need to find someone near you with Peugeot Planet to activate the rear windows once you have fitted all the electronics

D8s have no BSI

Remember those strap-on motor things that grabbed the manual window spline and turned it 8)

Anyhoo, in the 3 years I had my car I could count on one hand how many times I operated the rears, so little in fact that they were pretty slow to move.

It helps to ease noise and wind turbulence if you open both the front and rear by the same amount when having a smoke

I used to smoke in the D8 but I don't in the '9 - it stinks!

I know the turbulence of which you speak, on a smaller scale it's the same thing that makes a whistle whistle :cheesy:

I always found in the estate, I got a slow whoomp-whoomp-whoomp-whoomp sound/feeling which sent my head funny if I only opened the drivers window

Opening opposite windows is always a great way to get rid of bad farts too

I'm not really bothered about having the rears as such, but the d9 leather door cards I just bought are from an all electric window setup

just out of interest, I'll certinly have a good root around when I get the rear door cards off, but I think I'd be better off either:

A) finding some rear leather door cards for manual winders or

B) cut some holes as Mr Earwig suggested... should confuse the hell out of passengers when they see the winders plus a switch

anyway... thanks for your thoughts guys :cheesy:

I'll just add my two penn'orth Col, the wiring is NOT there. Been there, done that.
The job is definitely do-able but you'll have to make up your own looms.
