`Us northern hardmen use various words for engines donkeys, lumps, Pigs, knackers etc etc. I like to look knowledgable when I post :) :)

take your point re the airflow! Is it worth blocking off the egr while I am doing all this???

Just editing this as thought of something else??

If you wanted to clean out the intercooler (is it oil filled or is it justs air?) how do you go about it

If its justs air I assume you can justs flush it in some way as Oil deposist wil have built up blocking it?? If its oil filled could it be leaking thus the slight leak????

Oh I see

Blocking the EGR would be more trouble than it's worth really altough I think some have done it on here? I replaced mine with a newy and it cut the smoke down a bit and maybe perked up the performance but generally we don't see many issues with EGR's; they do leak a bit so you lose a bit of pressure before the turbo but not too bad.

There's no oil in the intercooler by design it is an air-to-air heat exchanger but oil does carry over in the air stream from the turbo and is perfectly normal. Cleaning it would be just to remove it and maybe slosh some petrol through it? unless it's really bad I wouldn't bother.

So in that case the oil sat on the ledge at the bottom wont be from inside the intercooler it may have been sprayed onto it at some time in the past?? If it had managed to get a shedload of oil inside and this had leaked out it would probabaly not run at all!! Cant remember seeing what your PUG is?? If a 406 hdi 110 how do you rate it?

My PUG is a Volvo now

I had a 110 exec (1999 T reg) had it for three years and unfortunately suffered every single fault that you could list on a HDi :? I now blaim that on the relatively light use of about 7000 miles a year - I don't think it liked that.

To be fair mine was a stonking performer and I allways considered I had a good'un in fact I'd genuinely call it 'fast'. I suffered the lower engine mount, torn-through eggsauce flexi, punctured intercooler hose, EGR leakage, throttle pot faults, DMF wear, clutch slip, bottom pulley failure, broken spring, failed in-tank fuel pump, numerous engine light episodes, failed radiator cooling fan, failed air con condensor (2 off), eggsauce fell off at the back, ...........I think that's about it.

I still forgive it though 8)

Getting back to your I/C then any oil present around it has come from within it - it is normal for some oil to collect in the I/C and if it's leaking then the positive air pressure inside it will blow out this oil onto the surroundings. I used to pop off the bottom hose every now and then and just drain any oil out.

Just poPped my airfilter out and tons of black dust in it and twigs etc so def needs another. I revVed the engine and viewed large rubber pipe that comes off the top of the intercooler and COULD see it expanding when the turbo kicked in. Will check out the bottom hose on saturday and do a full service. I did another post previously re number 4 pot injector leaking slightly (you could hear the hiss and see a slight mist each time it injected). I tightened the retaining nut up a flat with a spanner and its nearly gone and now need to torque all of them down to correct pressure. Do you think with this in mind that as a bit was escaping the power would suffer slightly?? I think the car has just been neglected and definitely nothing major wrong with it It just needs a bit of TLC .

by the way thanks for all the advice and if all goes well I will update you

Well after doing a full service and replacing a filthy air filter I noticed a slight improvement but still not the power I would expect with the turbo kicking in between 80mph to 95mph?? Checked all the pipeworks (intercoooler etc) and no holes splits etc. Driving into work this morning and remembered a post I saw yesterday. Put my hand down to the floor carpet and pulled it back and it went off like a rocket... Popped onto the motorway and like a different car...From what I can see the carpet was stopping the acelerator pedal from travelling down to its limit (by about a centimetre) I will now cut them down and you can feel the clunk as the pedal hits the stopper?? What an idiot and what an improvement. so the lesson in is look for the obvious!!!! Thanks to all for the advices and I am sure that its better than it would have been if I had spotted this earlier.

Sorry, one of the many, many problems they're supposed to have is the throttle getting stuck under the mats, that's why there was reports of run away Toyotas that mentioned they'd already stuffed the mats in the boot.

Probably a tad tasteless in retrospect
