40k between oil changes

Post by TooT »

Was talking to my brother on the phone the other day about cars and we got on to the subject of his van, its a 02 Vauxhall Vivaro on 165k. He was saying that he had it booked in for a service and mot and that hes not had the oil changed in it for over 40k

Anyway fannying around on the internet last night i found something interesting for him to read. Sludgy. Have a look

So ive emailed him the link. No response from him yet.

I heard a story of a bloke who bought a new Xsara here in Australia - drove it for 130k without servicing it (no timing belt changes, oil, fluids etc) - Part of his reasoning included the fact that by the time that you factored in running costs and depreciation, he would of broke even if he had run the car normally and sold it second hand...

Still, I don't understand ones reasoning!

Holy crap! I read page 1, then 9 and gave up! I get the point though.

Just shows you though that even if you do nothing else; at least change your oil.

My dad has a tale about one of the RAF mechanics calling him over to look inside the rocker box of a Merlin to see how much sludge had built up, there was just the space around the rockers clear, the rest was solid. The odd thing is I think there was actually a reason for it...

My bro's got a friend who's completely clueless about cars and has run his '95 ZX 1.9 D for something like 12 years without an oil change. He managed to persuade him to get the cambelt done once, but that's it.

Still going strong.

My bro used to have a 1.6 petrol 405 which he used to screw back and fore to Glasgow when he lived up there. Some time after he bought it I asked him when he'd last had it serviced and he never had, we checked the milage since he bought it and it was well over 30K so I insisted on doing it before it blew up. Warmed the oil up and it came out like treacle, but the engine was fine, suffered no detrimental effects despite the prolonged periods of 100mph with syrup in the box

A an aside, what do you think of this?

All better now like but I can't get the fill plug out (must've rusted up from the inside) so it was refilled through the breather hole, took fekking ages

Looks like it's creaming one out

The longest I've left an oil change is 2 years on her indoors Shitroen AX and it came out like Jelly, kinda lumpy.

My first car, a 1.4 Clio from 1994, had never had an air or oil filter change, had practically no oil in the sump - what little there was was like pitch. Also, there was almost no water in the expansion bottle. So it had generally been very much abused by its previous owner. The Wifely Person bought it for me as a surprise (needless to say, I was surprised).

Damn thing still ran fine; even got it to pass an MOT once it had been given its first ever service (it was 6 years old at the time) and it had some work done on the brakes.

It had a cracked bearing in the gearbox, so gear shifting was a chore, and had no power steering, so turning was a lot of effort too, but the car ran beautifully. It was even kinda sporty, lots of low-end power.

That's why my second car (my first once I'd passed my test) was also a Mk.1 Clio - I knew that even if it had been treated like crap, it would still run pretty well. Thankfully I bought one that was in excellent condition (this was in 2006, by which point it was 12 years old) and very reliable. I only traded it in (for money off the 406) because this Clio was a 1.2, which was a ridiculously underpowered engine, and it really really struggled to get up hills. Once, when going up the Berriedale Braes (see the pic below), it got to the top and there was steam pouring out from under the bonnet.

Image
The camera is level with the horizon - the incline at this part of the Berriedale Braes, right on this hairpin, is more than 15%.

Overall, glad to be shot of Clio's. I am too big for such a small car; the rear seat behind mine was always useless for people who actually had legs, due to my seat needing to be pushed all the way back ... and my knees were still stuck to the steering wheel...

I like Clio's. If I had to downgrade tomorrow to a cheap run about then a Clio it would be without fail.

Similarly to you, a collegue had one; did nothing to it, treated it to nothing and it always soldiered on 8)

The other cool thing about Clio's is that they're not aimed specifically at girls and at the same time a man can receive much respect from the ladies for driving one 8)
