My first car, a 1.4 Clio from 1994, had never had an air or oil filter change, had practically no oil in the sump - what little there was was like pitch. Also, there was almost no water in the expansion bottle. So it had generally been very much abused by its previous owner. The Wifely Person bought it for me as a surprise (needless to say, I was surprised).
Damn thing still ran fine; even got it to pass an MOT once it had been given its first ever service (it was 6 years old at the time) and it had some work done on the brakes.
It had a cracked bearing in the gearbox, so gear shifting was a chore, and had no power steering, so turning was a lot of effort too, but the car ran beautifully. It was even kinda sporty, lots of low-end power.
That's why my second car (my first once I'd passed my test) was also a Mk.1 Clio - I knew that even if it had been treated like crap, it would still run pretty well. Thankfully I bought one that was in excellent condition (this was in 2006, by which point it was 12 years old) and very reliable. I only traded it in (for money off the 406) because this Clio was a 1.2, which was a ridiculously underpowered engine, and it really really struggled to get up hills. Once, when going up the Berriedale Braes (see the pic below), it got to the top and there was steam pouring out from under the bonnet.
The camera is level with the horizon - the incline at this part of the Berriedale Braes, right on this hairpin, is more than 15%.
Overall, glad to be shot of Clio's. I am too big for such a small car; the rear seat behind mine was always useless for people who actually had legs, due to my seat needing to be pushed all the way back ... and my knees were still stuck to the steering wheel...
